The Lawerence School – Lovedale

Named after Major Gen Sir Henry Montgomery Lawrence, The Lawrence School in Lovedale was founded in 1858 as a school for the children of serving and ex-soldiers of the British Army. His mission took shape not just with the school at Lovedale, but four such schools, the other three being at Sanawar, Mount Abu and Ghora Gali (now in Pakistan). The schools were initially called Lawrence Asylum but the name was changed to Lawrence Memorial School in the year 1913. On being accorded the royal patronage in 1922, the name of the school was changed to the Lawrence Memorial Royal Military School. Soon after India’s independence, the school was handed over to the civilian authorities of the Government of India in 1949 and the name of the school was finally changed to the Lawrence School.

The Lawrence school at Lovedale has a sprawling campus of 750 acres, about six kilometres from Ooty in Tamil Nadu. Over the years, Lovedale has become synonymous with the school and so today the school is often referred to as Lovedale. The large, lush green campus of the school in the Nilgiris is divided into four schools. Children in classes four to six live eat and study together. Classes’ nine to twelve are in the senior school. All girls from class seven onwards are housed separately in girls’ hostel; however they study alongside the boys. Each of the four schools also has their own dinning hall and catering staff.

A member of the Round Square, an association of over 50 schools worldwide, and Indian Public Schools Conference, it is but obvious that the Schools Conference, it is but obvious that the school has an extensive exchange programme. Being affiliated to the central Board of Secondary Education the students are prepared for the CBSE examinations at the end of class 10 and 12. The Lawrence School has a year round season of various different sports. From January to June, cricket and hockey are the major sports. Through the late months of the year, football and athletics are popular. From mid March onwards, when the weather is warm, the swimming pool is the main scene of activity. Apart from these events, the school has a fine stable for riding and facilities for basketball, volleyball, gymnastics, tennis, table tennis and badminton. Spread among the lovely hills of the Nilgiris, the school is richly supplied with courses with cross-country running.
