Chandhigarh: Greetings, Guard of Honour, Patriotic Songs, dances, theatrical performances, tree plantations at the South Campus, emphasis on participatory management and sumptuous breakfast formed part of Independence Day celebrations at Panjab University Campus here today. Prof. R.C. Sobti, Vice-Chancellor, Panjab University hoisted the national flag.
Addressing the large gathering of University officials, faculty members, students and participants from Ankur School and Guru Gobind Singh Vidya Mandir, Ratwara Sahib in the cultural activities and their family members, Prof. R.C. Sobti, the Vice-Chancellor, highlighted the sacred significance of the Independence Day, "We are celebrating the 64th Independence Day here only because of the great sacrifices made by our freedom fighters, men, women and children in different phases of our freedom struggle. As an emerging developed nation, we should continue to practice the values of self-service, sacrifice, fearlessness, truth, compassion and non-violence which inspired our great leaders as well as the masses of India during our freedom struggle".
Professor Sobti also added that Panjab University, Chandigarh is one of the pioneering institutions of higher education and research in India and has been enlisted by the Govt. of India as one of the eminent institutions with sufficient potential for excellence in all fields of knowledge and research. As a leading University of the nation, it is our bounden duty to provide quality education and produce the enlightened citizens for the future work of the nation. As the Govt. of India has decided to launch 1500 new universities in the next decade, Panjab University will try its utmost to produce the excellent academics, administrators and leaders equipped with ethical values to take up the different important responsibilities in the new and expanding horizon of the education".
Expressing gratitude to Professor Manmohan Singh, the Hon'ble Prime Minister of India, Professor Sobti announced, "Funds will not be a constraint for the rapid development of the education system of the nation and Panjab University is the living example of it – thanks to the largesse given to us by the Prime Minister, Professor Manmohan Singh".
Professor Sobti also assured the audience that, "By 2012 Panjab University will have a new look both in terms of infrastructural and academic developments which will add one more glorious chapter in the enviable record of Panjab University in the domain of public service".
Professor Sobti also informed the distinguished guests about the recent achievements of Panjab University e.g. the provision of dual degrees, choice based credit system, the signing of MOUs with foreign universities, 25% fee concession to the wards of P.U. employees (working as well as retired) in all the self-financing courses of the University, the Pension becoming a part of the University Budget from the next financial year, the imminent 90% funding by the Central Government, the budgetary provision for 1510 teaching posts and the implementation of student friendly policies in terms of the admission/fee concession/scholarship etc. for the welfare of the meritorious and the economically backward students. The University decided to make the Student Research Convention as the part of Panjab University Budget, all the pending cases of Career Advancement Scheme (CAS) till now have already been settled and special grants have been announced to the Young Faculty for making the research projects. Rs. 20 lac have sanctioned to each Regional Centre of Panjab University for providing facilities to students and faculty. Professor Sobti also announced that "all efforts are being made to make Panjab University a Green Campus. More than 3000 plants have been planted during the last three works only and the greening of the South Campus is on the upswing".
Professor Sobti also made an appeal to all the teachers/administrative officials/students/stakeholders in Panjab University, – "As Panjab University, Chandigarh is about to enter an important phase of its growth and development which will provide our University a great status both nationally and internationally, the faculty members, students and the administrative officials should display an equally remarkable sense of commitment to their duties and responsibilities and rise above the vested interests, petty politics and parochialism which are an obstacle in the majestic march of Panjab University towards the heights of excellence in higher education and research".
Prof. Sobti also made an appeal to all the well-wishers/faculty members/students of Panjab University to write an Anthem of the University reflecting its unique national character, spirit and vision and submit their entries to the Director, Dept. of Public Relations, Panjab University by 15th September 2010. The entries received by the University will be examined by a High Powered Committee of experts. The person whose entry is finally adjudged to be the Anthem of the Panjab University will be suitably rewarded in the forthcoming Convocation of the University.
The Vice-Chancellor and the Registrar, Panjab University made an appeal to all the well-wishers/ stakeholders/ students/P.U. faculty and others to liberally donate for the cause of the victims of the Leh natural disaster.

The Vice-Chancellor declared that in lieu of 15th of August 2010, 16th of August 2010 to be observed as a Holiday in all the teaching/non-teaching departments of Panjab University, its Regional Centres and all the affiliated Colleges. However, the already scheduled examinations and meetings will continue as per programme/schedule.
