New Delhi: The book "A Brief History of Water Resources in India", on water crisis and its management systems, written by Dr. Shri Krishan, Professor, Department of History, Maharishi Dayanand University, Rohtak, was released by Prof. Aditya Mukherjee of Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi at the Delhi Book Fair, here today.

Speaking on the occasion, Prof. Mukherjee, said that the colonial regime in India destroyed the traditional river system which was very effective for irrigation and land rejuvenation. The new system that was brought in by Britishers, led to situations of floods and droughts in states like Bihar. He stated that water conservation practices should be based on our own experiences, practices and wisdom.

Smt Arvind Manjit Singh, Additional Director General (I/c), Publications Division mentioned that the Division has been actively fulfilling its role of empowering people with knowledge by making its books available at affordable prices. She further said that the Division has brought out over 8000 titles encompassing diverse facets of Indian panorama like history & freedom struggle, art & culture, flora & fauna, science & technology, biographies, children's literature, reference books etc. The Division also publishes reputed and established journals in various fields like literary magazine Ajkal in Hindi and Urdu, Balbharati for children in Hindi, Kurukshetra on rural development in Hindi and English, Yojana, the developmental monthly in 13 languages and Employment News in English, Hindi and Urdu for the unemployed and under-employed youth and other career aspirants.

The book provides an insight into the traditional methods of water harvesting. It traces the history of water resources in India from ancient to the modern times. In the light of the present day water crisis in India, the book highlights the need to conserve and preserve this precious resource for the future.

The book release function was followed by a discussion on 'Water Crisis in Contemporary India' keenly participated by Prof. Mukherjee and the author. Speaking on the occasion, Prof. Shri Krishna said that we had always assumed that water was available in abundance. It was only in recent decades that we have realized that usable water was not inexhaustible and there was very little water available for human consumption. He also pointed out that water scarcity brings up the hierarchy in the society.
