Report by India Education bureau, Ahmedabad: Come 15th January 2013, three students at Ahmedabad along with other 15 students in Delhi, Ahmedabad, Mumbai, Kolkata, Bangalore and Chennai will be declared to receive the Shell Junior National Science Scholarship that carries a cash award of Rs.50,000/- each. In addition, the top three of this 18 selected students will also be honoured as National Winner with Rs.75,000/- each.
 
And this is not the end of this story, 12 proud teachers will be selected as mentor teachers of the regional and national winners and will receive the “Science Excellence Award” which includes an opportunity to visit the National Science Centre, UK for a one week workshop/training.
 
In order to show the excellence in science and mathematics, about 401 students of Std. IX and X from different schools in Gujarat had appeared the Shell Junior National Science Scholarship at Anand Niketan School at Shilaj in Ahmedabad on Sunday. Out of this about three students will receive Rs.50,000/- as the Regional Level Award. The result will be announced on 15th January 2013.
 
The test has been held simultaneously in six cities including, Delhi, Ahmedabad, Mumbai, Kolkata, Bangalore and Chennai. The test was mainly in objective type with only one subjective question to determine the student's aptitude and motivation for science.
 
The unique and exciting scholarship programme for Indian school students has been introduced by Shell, a world leader in technology and innovation, in partnership with British Council India. The National Council of Science Museums (NCSM) is the knowledge partner for the programme.
 
For western region, NCSM has recognized the Gujarat Council on Science & Technology (GUJCOST) as the nodal organisation to organise the Sunday test at Anand Niketan School Ahmedabad. About 713 students of Std. IX and X were registered for this scientific programme, out of which 401 students appeared.
 
Speaking on the occasion, Shri G. S. Rautela, Director General, NCSM expressed that the programme aims at developing among high-school students, an appreciation for science and to look at a career in engineering. Besides awarding the top performing students, the programme will provide a unique in-service professional development opportunity to science teachers of the scholarship awardees.
 
Students have solved 100 multiple type questions in physics, chemistry, maths and general knowledge along with one subjective question in 90 minutes. For student’s convenience, the question paper was prepared in English along with six regional languages i.e. Hindi, Tamil, Bangla, Marathi, Kannada and Gujarati
 
Three top scorers from each of the six locations (18 in all) will receive the Regional Level Award. The three toppers (basis marks scored) from amongst these regional winners will receive the National Level Award.
 
Dr. Narottam Sahoo, Advisor, GUJCOST, Shri N. T. Kasar, Curator, Nehru Science Center, Mumbai, Shri Dattatreya Kulkarni, Manager, British Library, Ahmedabad and Shri Kumar Mangal, Managing Director of Anand Niketan School were present during the examination and interacted the students.
