Report by India Education bureau, Hyderabad: The Indian Institute of Technology Hyderabad (IITH) announces the Minor in Entrepreneurship in its BTech curriculum with the aim to instil entrepreneurial spirit in students. This course is designed to equip students with entrepreneurship competency, business acumen and entrepreneurial vision needed to become job creators.
Available to B Tech students in the third year, this program is spread over 2 years and consists of 12 credits.This course begins with a 1 credit course on Introduction to Business Plan in the first semester. Of the remaining, there are 9 courses with 1 credit each spread over 4 semesters.There is one 3-credit course on Business Plan Development to be completed in a project mode and may require field visits.
The inclusion of entrepreneurship in the IIT Hyderabad syllabus is a boon to students without business background but aspire to own or run a company. The course is taught by faculty members, serial entrepreneurs, leaders from successful start-up organizations, and senior industry stalwarts who provide practical knowledge and guidance that students need to start and run a new business. Industry stalwarts like BVR Mohan Reddy, Satish Andra,and Ramesh Loganathan have been visiting faculty in the past.
"Of all the student clubs, the E-cell (entrepreneurship cell), was very famous with the students. Given the interest among students, we decided to formalize this entrepreneurship course as a minor. We also have plans to set up a fill-fledged incubator to provide space, guidance, and environment to groom our students into entrepreneurs", said Professor Faiz, Dean,Academic Program at IIT Hyderabad.
Described as a great learning experience, this program demonstrates how entrepreneurship is not solely about starting a new business - it is a mindset. Students learn to identify when and how to seize opportunities, understand the challenges of financing, the pitfalls to avoid, and how to grow their business. They will also be given many opportunities to network and socialize with professionals and successful entrepreneurs.
