New Delhi : A one day seminar on South Asian Diaspora and Emerging Legal Challenges was held at South Asian University. Justice BS Chauhan, Chairman - Law Commission of India made the keynote speech in the inaugural session chaired by Dr.Kavita A. Sharma, President, South Asian University.
Justice Chauhan, who is also the Chairperson of Cauvery Water Dispute Tribunal, spoke about the complexities while dealing with issues like parental child abduction, surrogacy and adoption involving cross-border jurisdictions. The problem becomes even more daunting when there are no laws to deal with most of these issues, he opined. Human beings are not commodities, he said referring to the state of affairs in surrogacy.
During the course of the seminar many legal issues were discussed including Cross border NRI marrige and divoice issues, inter country child abduction, adoption, Hague conventions and South Asia and the proposed Surrogacy Law in India by a number of legal experts who included Kirti Singh, Anil Malhotra, Dr. Luther Rangreji and Mr.GovindarajHegde. The valedictory address was delivered by Mr.Narinder Singh, who is a member of United Nationals International Law Commission.
