Azim Premji University holds its fifth convocation

Bangalore: Azim Premji University held its fifth convocation ceremony on August 19, 2017,at Jnana Jyothi Auditorium, Central college building, Palace road, Bengaluru. 320 students from the MA Education, MA Development, MA Public Policy and Governance and LLM (Law and Development) programs received their degrees from Honorable Governor Shri. Vajubhai Vala, Governor of Karnataka and Mr. Azim Premji, Chancellor of the University.

Established in 2010 by the Azim Premji Foundation, the University was founded with an explicit social purpose; to develop competent and committed professionals for the social sector, who can significantly contribute to the just, equitable, humane and sustainable development of the country.

The University currently offers 4 postgraduate programs and 4 undergraduate programs in the sciences, social sciences and humanities. These programmes offer students a variety of specializations. The University also conducts continuing education programs for practitioners and is engaged in extensive research in the Education and Development domains.

Speaking on the occasion Anurag Behar, Vice Chancellor said “It gives us immense pleasure to see the 5th batch of students graduating. Most of these students are placed in meaningful roles with organizations in the social sector, through our campus placements. Our students are translating our vision into reality by working and to directly contribute to the country. This is also a clear reaffirmation of the need for competent professionals in the social sector”.

The University is deeply committed to diversity and to offering equal opportunity to students from disadvantaged backgrounds through extensive financial and personal support. It has enrolled over 2000 students since inception and currently has a team of over 200, comprising faculty, researchers and others. Students represent 25 states and 50 % of them come from rural and small town areas.
