New Delhi: Bill and Melinda Gates recently released their 2017 Annual Letter, “Warren Buffett’s Best Investment”. In 2006, Buffett donated the bulk of his fortune to the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to fight disease and reduce inequity. The letter addresses the world’s progress in the past 25 years on global health and development issues, including cutting extreme poverty in half and reducing childhood deaths by half. Bill and Melinda Gates highlight their optimism for continued progress and outline areas of involvement from the foundation, which works in close collaboration with governments, health agencies, nonprofit organizations, and other philanthropic entities and individuals.
Speaking about the foundation co-chairs’ 2017 Annual Letter, Dr. NachiketMor, India Country Director, Bill & Melinda Gates Foundationsaid, “The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation is committed to working closely with the Government of India to address inequities that affect the most vulnerable populations, so that everyone can lead healthy, productive lives. The co-chairs’ annual letter highlights the progress made in global health and I am encouraged by India’s progress across many areas of health and development as well. A study on the newborn mortality rates funded by the foundation in India shows that the childbirth survival rates improved when trained health care workers with the right tools attended the births. Our work in HIV prevention through community groups in India for sex workers hasproduced phenomenal resultsby empowering these women and achieving the original purpose of preventing HIV. There is still much work to be done but with the progress levels improving across key development indicators, we are optimistic of the future. The foundation will continue to partner the Government to advance its development goals and scale proven solutions across health, sanitation, financial services for the poor and agriculture.”
