Jamia Hamdard Organizes Webinar On “Covid-19 Pandemic: Role Of Physiotherapy In Acute Care”
New Delhi: Department of Rehabilitation Sciences, Jamia Hamdard organized 5th Webinar on “COVID- 19 Pandemic: Role of Physiotherapy in Acute Care” on 28th June to enhance students’ knowledge by providing them experience from professional working with patients suffering from COVID-19.
The webinar got an overwhelming response with more than 1200 participants from across the country and abroad. The webinar was hosted on Google Meet and was also streamed live on You Tube.
The webinar was attended by professionals from various hospitals such as Max, AIIMS, Medanta, Gangaram, Institute of Liver and Biliary Sciences etc. There were academicians and students from all over the Indian Universities including Jamia Millia Islamia, Galgotia University, Amity University, Lovely Professional University among others. Professionals from other fields such as Unani and Pharmacy also attended the event.
The first resource person Dr. Vandana Dua, Physiotherapist at Department of Neurosciences Centre, AIIMS, New Delhi expressed her views on “Manifestations of COVID-19: Respiratory and Beyond”. Her presentation included the introduction to COVID 19 pandemic, its epidemiology, routes of transmission of coronavirus, population who is at risk, its pathophysiology, manifestations and symptomatology of the disease. She elaborated on the pulmonary and multi system manifestations with a special emphasis on the neurological involvement.
Resource person Dr. Gufran Jaleel, Assistant Professor- Physiotherapy at Department of Rehabilitation Sciences, Jamia Hamdard elaborated on “Physiotherapy Recommendations and Guidelines in Acute Care in COVID -19”. He mentioned that physiotherapists, mainly cardio- respiratory physiotherapists, are among the healthcare professionals involved in the management and care of this patient population and play a key role in the noninvasive support management, postural changes, mobilization, as well as during the weaning from invasive mechanical ventilator support. He expressed that the acute hypoxemic patients may experience dyspnea and in these cases devices, HFNO, CPAP, and NIV may be useful. He gave some recommendations on basis of evidences.
Resource person Dr Altaf Hussain Mir, Physiotherapist at JPATC, AIIMS, New Delhi presented a clinical case study on COVID 19 and showed how effectively patient respond and recover by following the Evidence Based Practice. He drew on experiences in ICU physiotherapy. He added physiotherapists are an essential professional group who will be required to limit the severity of ICU-acquired weakness in patients and provide longer term rehabilitation and interventions to survivors of COVID-19 to allow them to function upon returning home and regain their life roles.
He gave insight into how the clinical presentations of cases have changed over a period of time owing to the change in mutation. The line of treatment and possible infection control guidelines were also discussed by him.
The panelist Dr Jyoti Ganai expressed that the speakers elaborately presented on pathophysiology, clinical manifestations, and physiotherapy recommendations and guidelines in acute care for COVID -19. She also added that the videos and pictures of patients in ICU gave insight into real experiences with COVID -19 cases.
