MHRD recognizes O. P. Jindal Global University as an`Institution of Eminence’
New Delhi: The O. P. Jindal Global University (JGU) has been recognized as an `Institution of Eminence’ by the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India and has entered into a select list of top 10 private institutions in the country, which will be freed from regulatory control and given full autonomy. This was announced today.
On achieving this milestone, the Founding Chancellor and benefactor of JGU, Mr. Naveen Jindal said, ‘I am immensely pleased with the recognition of JGU as an Institution of Eminence. I would like to thank the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India for recognizing our efforts to provide world class education in India. JGU was founded in memory of my father, Shri O.P. Jindal as an educational institution that will create new opportunities for empowering the youth of India and the world. Our commitment to excellence is deeply embedded in the vision and mission of our university. The recognition of JGU as an IoE in a decade of its existence is a tribute to the outstanding contribution of its faculty, students and staff. This will create new opportunities for expanding the university while breaking new grounds in promoting excellence and innovation in institution building. It heralds a new era in our journey towards nation-building”.
Professor (Dr.) C. Raj Kumar, Founding Vice Chancellor of JGU said, “This is a red letter day for JGU and is truly remarkable that the recognition of JGU as an ‘Institution of Eminence’ has come during our 10th anniversary celebrations. Our entire university community is strongly committed to achieving the IOE mandates and targets, and to meet the overall goal of JGU being ranked a top global university. I would like to thank Mr. Naveen Jindal, our Founding Chancellor and benefactor, for his visionary leadership and inspiring contribution to building an institution of excellence in India. Chancellor Jindal had established JGU through a generous act of philanthropy, while ensuring academic freedom and institutional autonomy. This is a befitting occasion for us to thank and express our profound gratitude to the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India; University Grants Commission; and the Empowered Experts Committee for reposing faith in our institutional capabilities. Our faculty, students and staff deserve our deepest appreciation today, as they placed their trust in a young, growing university. They have contributed substantially to JGU’s accomplishments, and JGU is committed to contributing to India’s success story in the world. We are also grateful to the Government of Haryana for their support in our evolution in the last decade”.
Reacting to this development, Registrar, JGU, Prof. Y.S.R. Murthy said, “This is a historic recognition for JGU and congratulations to all members of the JGU Community. These recent recognitions will spur us to work harder and aim higher. I wish to acknowledge and thank our academic partners across the world for their collaborations with JGU and for undertaking a series of mutually-beneficial academic activities.”.
Based in Sonipat in the National Capital Region of Delhi, JGU consists of eight inter-disciplinary Schools. As a part of its application, JGU has submitted a detailed 15-year ambitious vision plan to enter the world university rankings. The plan seeks to address, among other things, academic matters, faculty recruitment, student admissions and scholarship, research, collaborations, infrastructure development and governance. Detailed implementation plans have also been drawn up with clear targets.
In July 2019, JGU was ranked by QS in the global top 150 amongst all young universities that are under 50 years of age. QS Young University Ranking 2020 ranked universities that have been established in and after 1969. JGU became the only private university from India and the only university with a focus entirely on social sciences, arts and humanities to be featured in the QS Young University Rankings 2020.
In June 2019, JGU became the youngest and the only new Indian university to break into top 1000 in the prestigious Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) World University Rankings 2020. Out of 50 new entrants globally, JGU was the youngest university, which achieved this distinction. Out of more than 28,000 universities in the world, only top 1001 were ranked by QS in terms of their performance criteria. In the university’s tenth year of existence, JGU was placed amongst the top 2.67% of all universities globally, making it the youngest Indian university to break into the world ranking of universities.
