Aligarh: Professor M Masroor A Khan (Department of Botany, Aligarh Muslim University) delivered a special talk on marine algae used as plant growth promoters during the ’10th European Conference on Marine Natural Products’ held at Kolymbari City, Greece.
Delineating on the topic, Prof Khan said that when marine polysaccharides like alginate, carrageenan and chitosan are exposed to gamma radiation, various low molecular weight oligosaccharides are produced, which can be use as potent plant growth promoters.
Prof Khan further informed that these plant growth promoters when sprayed on aromatic plants enhance their aroma. He added that the research is also useful for enhancing oil production in growing plants.
Using the technique, Prof Khan has been able to increase productivity and quality of several aromatic plants like khas, lemongrass, geranium, eucalyptus, sauf, mint and peppermint.
