New Delhi: Tata Power, India’s largest integrated power company, has always undertaken various initiatives with an aim to improve the quality of life and ensure holistic development of its surrounding communities. Following this philosophy, Tata Power’s ramped-up CSR capabilities and operations delivered long-term sustainable development in FY17. Through this, the company reached out to more than 300 villages/urban pockets across 13 states, Mumbai and Delhi, benefitting over half a million people.
Speaking on this, Anil Sardana, CEO and MD, Tata Power, said, “More than a century back Jamsetji Tata, founder of the Tata group sowed the tradition of nation and community building. Following this philosophy, Tata Power’s focus on CSR has been on designing and deploying sustainable programmes, where the community takes ownership of the programmes in the true spirit of participatory development. As a company, we believe in ‘Leadership with Care’ by pursuing best practices on Care for our Community and sustain the concept of being “neighbour of choice”. As a part of collective responsibility towards nation building, Tata Power and its entities will continue to engage with key stakeholders, including community, academia, government and civil society to sustain and share the desired outcomes in the long run”.
With a strategic focus on sustainable long-term programmes across all locations, Tata Power revised its focus areas based on independent need assessment and changing socio-economic conditions. They include education (focus on gender balance), health and sanitation, livelihood and employability, social capital and institution building, renewable energy, water and financial inclusivity. Outlined are key activities undertaken by the entities of Tata Power.
Supported flood relief efforts in response to floods at Assam
In this year, 320 schools were covered benefitting 0.6 lakh school children
Health programmes were implemented in 167 villages, which covered 1.17 lakh beneficiaries
Livelihood and employability programmes were run in 129 villages and 0.05 lakh residents covered
Flagship programme of Tata Power Skill Development Institute (TPSDI) covered 10,000 youths. This year, the fifth centre of TPSDI was commissioned and dedicated to the nation at Jamshedpur. So five states of art skill building centres under TPSDI are slated to enhance skilling opportunities for community in the future.
Under education, as part of affirmative action, 18 percent students from the SC/ST community were covered. There is a special focus on improvements through remedial classes, e-learning and teacher training programmes.
Open defection-free awareness campaigns were organised, covering nearly 5,000 households.
Community-owned drinking water supply initiatives were initiated with sensitisation on water, sanitation and hygiene, with focus on prevention campaign for vector borne and water borne diseases. As many as 164 awareness sessions on preventative health were also conducted to spread awareness about various diseases.
Under livelihood and employability, integrated agriculture initiatives covered 3,371 beneficiaries having and implementation area of 3,100 acres. Besides TPSDI, other employability training programmes covered 1,047 youths
Under social capital and financial inclusivity, 537 SHGs covering 6,400 SHG members from 133 villages and a gross fund of Rs147 lakh was mobilised. 42 percent women members of SHGs were trained in income generation activities.
