2nd Five- day GIAN Course Inaugurated at Dept of English
Aligarh : A 2nd five-day online GIAN course on; “Subtitling Screened Dialogue: The Pragmatics of Audiovisual Translation” was inaugurated in the department of English, AMU on November 01.
The Foreign Faculty of the course, Prof Mara Logaldo, (IULM, Milan, Italy), a renowned scholar of Audiovisual Translation in her keynote address presented a summary of the information that would be covered throughout the course. She highlighted the features of audio-visual and multimodal translation, verbal and non-verbal elements and cultural challenges faced by the translator. She also touched upon the importance of human intervention in translation and provided an insight to India’s linguistic- cultural diversity and audio-visual translation industry.
The Chief Guest of the inaugural session, Prof M Asaduddin, Department of English, Jamia Millia Islamia, New Delhi, in his presidential remark presented a brief history of translation in India and highlighted the significance of the subtitling in current academia. He further enriched the discourse by enlightening the audience about the aspects of inter- semiotic translation and localisation in audio-visual translation.
At the inaugural session of the course, Prof Mohd Rizwan Khan, Host Faculty and Course Coordinator, Department of English, said that audiovisual translation is difficult from the normal translation. In this we need to understand the importance of using subtitling in the films etc. In Audiovisual translations, we need to match the Linguistic and Para-Lingual features so that it is at par excellence. He cited the example of Jurassic Park, in which Dinosaurs are called “Danav”. He also mentioned that the primary goal of the GIAN course is to invite foreign faculty to create opportunities for Indian students in expanding their mental horizons.
Prof Arif Nazir, Dean, Faculty of Arts, said that the audio visual translation is similar to Natak in Sanskrit. He also highlighted the fact that translation in both mediums, oral and spoken is a very difficult task in itself.
Prof M Jahangir Warsi, Local Coordinator of GIAN appreciated the department of English, for initiating a number of GIAN courses in the university.
Prof M Asim Siddiqui, Chairperson, Department of English; highlighted that subtitling is very important for understanding the feature films and human intervention is a must.
