3-day annual sports fest ‘Vriddhi’ started at NIT Rourkela to mark the week long celebrations of National Unity Day
National Unity Day (Rashtriya Ekata Divas) is celebrated in India on 31 October every year to mark the birth anniversary of Shri Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel and this year the nation is conducting a weeklong celebration on the occasion of ‘Unity Day’ from 25th to 31st October 2022 under the aegis of Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav.
To join the celebration, the National Institute of Technology, Rourkela has also organized the fifth edition of the annual sports festival, ‘Vriddhi’, starting today. This three-day event featuring major sports tournaments such as Football, Cricket, Badminton, Chess, Kabaddi, Volleyball, Basketball, and Table Tennis will conclude on 30th October.
Chief Guest of the inaugural ceremony, Prof. K. Ummaheshwar Rao, (Director, NIT Rourkela) extended his warm welcome and wishes to all the participants. Motivating the students he said, “We have seen the final moments victory by Team India during ICC Men’s T20 World Cup recent match and that defines one should keep trying and performing for the best results. Don’t’ lose hope until the game is over and believe in yourself. Let’s create a positive and competitive environment upholding the sportsmanship with team spirit, unity and start the event with enthusiasm, strength, and enjoyment.
Prof Rohan Dhiman (Registrar), Prof. Siddharth S Jena (Dean Student Welfare), Prof. Poonam Singh (President, Student Activity Centre), Vice Presidents of Games and Sports Society, Prof. Ramesh Kumar Mohapatra & Dr. Mayank Yadav and the Vice president of the Technical Society Dr. Kaustav Chaudhury also graced the occasion and encouraged the participants.
Vriddhi registered around 550 male/female participants from various colleges such as VSSUT Burla, International Institute of Information Technology Naya Raipur, Odisha University of Agriculture and Technology (OUAT), Parala Maharaja Engineering College (PMEC) Brahmapur, Indira Gandhi Institute of Technology (IGIT), The Silicon Institute of Technology (SIT) Bhubaneswar, C. V. Raman Global University Bhubaneswar, Institute of Technical Education & Research (ITER) Bhubaneswar along with additional 100 players from NIT Rourkela. Female players will compete in Badminton and Kho Kho.
The whole event is organized by the Games and Sports Society Club under Student Activity Centre, NIT Rourkela. All sports will be played in the league format and will be played in the respective halls and grounds like Dilip Tirkey Stadium, Sachin Tendulkar Sports Complex (STSC), PT Usha Sports Complex, etc. at NIT Rourkela campus. There would be two Music-Standups as a part of the non-sporting programs during the fest. Abhisit Ranjit Singh, Nigam Mohanty, and Vennela are the student convenors of the program.
