5-Star GRIHA Rated Phase-V ‘Green Campus’ Inaugurated at IIM Kozhikode

Eco-friendly Green Campus Sets Sustainability Benchmark with Solar Energy Plant, Rainwater Harvesting, Sewage Treatment Plant and state-of-the-art Intelligent Classrooms

Kozhikode:  The Indian Institute of Management, Kozhikode, added a new feather to its cap opening the Phase-V Green Campus at Kunnamangalam here today. The newly-inaugurated Campus Area spread across 15 acres has a total built-up area of 3.00 Lakh Square feet. Dr. A. C. Muthiah, Chairman, Southern Petrochemical Industries Limited (SPIC) and former Chairperson Board of Governors IIMK and Mr. K. C. Mohan former Board Member IIMK and Member of Sub-Committee of Construction unveiled the Plaque for the Phase-V Green Campus in the presence of Prof. Debashis Chatterjee, Director and the IIM Kozhikode family.

Water, Soil and Energy conservation measures have been extensively adopted in the Phase-V of the IIMK campus owing to which the campus has been  certified with “ Five Star” rating under GRIHA (Green Rating for Integrated Habitat Assessment) – an initiative of Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, Government of India and The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI). Solar energy to the tune of 50 kWp (Kilo Watt Peak) is also being harnessed in the campus. Additionally, a rainwater harvesting pond has been developed within the campus for catering to the water requirements of the whole campus. Besides this the Campus also boasts of rain water storage tanks with 40 lakh liters storage capacity which have been provided under the campus buildings so as to meet any emergency requirement. A Sewage Treatment plant has also been established in the campus for treating effluents which can then be used for toilet/wash room flushing and gardening/irrigation purposes.

Another highlight of this Campus is the introduction of the state-of-the-art intelligent classroom set up which will be virtual mic-less aided by first-of-a-kind use of ceiling microphone offering adaptive and intelligent response to user and room behavior. Additionally the classrooms also boasts of cloud based conferencing, streaming and audio conferencing with both Wired and Wireless presentation capability. Students with access credentials will be able to participate in the classroom sessions virtually from anywhere in the world.

Speaking on the occasion, Prof. Debashis Chatterjee, Director, IIM Kozhikode, thanked Dr. A.C Muthiah and Mr. K.C Mohan for their immeasurable contribution and support towards making the Phase-V Green Campus project a reality. He added, “The eco-friendly nature of this new addition to the plastic-free IIM Kozhikode Campus is testimony to the Institute’s commitment to provide world-class facilities as well as safeguard the environment at the same time. We take great pride that this Green Campus could be a role model and a shining beacon to organizations looking to co-habituate academic excellence with sustainable living.”
