Bengaluru: Doctors at Fortis Hospital, Bannerghatta Road recently conducted Karnataka’s first Spiral Enteroscopy procedure on a 68-year patient suffering from gastrointestinal (GI)bleed. The team of doctors was led by Dr Ravindra BS-Director-Department of Gastroenterology & Hepatology, Fortis Hospital, Bannerghatta Road who used using power spiral enteroscopy technology along with Dr Balaji- Consultant Gastroenterology and Dr Prasanna Bhat- Consultant – Gastroenterology & Hepatology, Fortis Hospital, Bannerghatta Road and Team of anesthetists lead by Dr Murali Chakravarthy- Director, Department of Anesthesia, Critical Care and Pain relief.
Power Spiral Enteroscopy is a motorized type of endoscope, which can be driven by a special motor into the 22-ft long small intestine and inspects the insides of the intestine. It helps in treating complex conditions in the small intestine and improves diagnosis and patient outcomes for chronic and complex conditions.
The Patient had undergone endoscopy and colonoscopy however bleeding was seen to be coming from the small intestine. Ct abdomen was also done to identify the cause of bleeding, however, it did not reveal the bleeding site. Therefore, Capsule endoscopy was performed on this patient which showed bleeding from the small intestine, we decided to use the Spirus enteroscopy technique for this case as we had to examine and visualize the small intestine. The entire procedure from oral to Cecum was completed in 45minutes’ ‘ said Dr Ravindra BS-Director-Department of Gastroenterology & Hepatology, Fortis Hospital, Bannerghatta Road.
Regular single balloon or double-balloon enteroscopy takes a lot of time 1-3 hrs even then complete visualization of the small intestine was difficult. With this new technology which is available in India for the last 1 year, we were able to see the whole intestine in 45 minutes first time in Karnataka it revealed multiple ulcers in the small intestine biopsy showed Ulcers due to Painkillers usage she had done. New technology of Power spiral enteroscopy has made small intestine visualisation now easy and fast we can control bleeding take biopsy and remove foreign body from small intestine as well, he added”.
NCBI states that “Obscure gastrointestinal bleeding (OGIB) is one of the most challenging disorders faced by gastroenterologists because of its evasive nature and difficulty in identifying the exact source of bleeding. Recent technological advances such as video capsule endoscopy and small bowel deep enteroscopy have revolutionized the diagnosis and management of patients with OGIB.”
