Tata Chemicals announces Shri Darbari Seth Scholarship to mark the visionary’s birth centenary

Mumbai: Tata Chemicals has consistently harnessed innovation to deliver value for customers and serve society through science. This vision was strengthened decades ago, under the leadership of Shri. Darbari S. Seth, known as the man with the Midas touch. To commemorate the visionary’s birth centenary, Tata Chemicals today announced a scholarship to provide financial assistance to students for higher studies.

To foster an equal opportunity environment, the Shri Darbari Seth Scholarship will be applicable to the students who are residents of Okhamandal, wards of Tata Chemicals’ employees and students belonging to the focus segments as specified in the Company’s Diversity Policy i.e. Gender, Disadvantaged Communities, and Differently Abled.

The celebration witnessed the coming together of Tata Chemicals’ alumni – Mohan Vadgama, Ismail Momin, Ganapathy S, Gopal Prabhune, Harish Bhat, Anil Vaidya, Vivek Talwar and Latha Vasan, who shared their experiences of working under the guidance of Shri. Darbari Seth. The event was attended by many past and present employees of Tata Chemicals.

Mr. R Mukundan, MD & CEO, Tata Chemicals reminisced his experience with the legendary leader. Calling him a technocrat and a man who understood the power of the human touch, Mr. Mukundan spoke about how he was inspired by the commitment and exemplary ethics of Mr. Seth and that Mithapur would not be what it is, without him. Mr. Mukundan remembered him as a stalwart who embodied kindness and responsibility.

The Shri Darbari Seth Scholarship will take his legacy forward and provide equal opportunities to all segments of the society. Tata Chemicals, in its journey of eight decades has transformed from a manufacturing to a science and innovation-led entity and will continue to drive value through innovation, digitalisation and sustainability.”

Mr. Darbari Seth, the first R&D manager the group had as a CEO, was a chemical engineer from the University of Cincinnati in the US. He worked with JRD Tata for several years and was recognised for his ethics and drive. He revolutionised the Tata Group companies he was a part of as they flourished internationally, owing to his keen business acumen.

From transforming an arid land to create Gangotri at Mithpaur, Mr. Darbari inspired Tata Chemicals through his distinguished persona to carve the path for a bright and sustainable future.
