JU, GDC Kathua organise online workshop on ‘Media Literacy’

Kathua: Career Counseling and Placement Cell of Government Degree College Kathua in collaboration with Department of Lifelong Learning, University of Jammu today organised a one day workshop on Media Literacy through digital mode.

The programme was held under the overall supervision of Dr. Kavita Suri, Director, DLL, University of Jammu and Prof. Asha Ram Sharma, Principal, GDC, Kathua.

The special Resource Person was Dr. Archna Kumari, Assistant Professor, Department of Mass Communication and New Media, Central University of Jammu.

The programme was conducted under the Manodarpan initiative of MHRD, Government of India. This programme was one among series of Programmes being conducted in different colleges of State under able and dynamic leadership of Commissioner/Secretary Higher Education, Talat Parvez Rohella.

In his welcome address, Prof Asha Ram Sharma highlighted the importance and necessity of workshop for students. He emphasized that today’s workshop on “Media Literacy” shall help students to differentiate between information and misinformation and not falling prey to fake news and false propaganda. He appreciated the efforts of DLL, JU and Career Counseling and Placement Cell of the College for the organisation of this Workshop. He stressed upon students to take advantage of such programmes organized by college, as such awareness workshops can shape their career and lead them to path of progress.

Dr. Kavita Suriinher address emphasized that any news which, the students receive through various social media platforms must be shared after proper verification from source. She also discussed about the importance of critical thinking in deciding the validity and authenticity of news.

Dr. Rewa Khajuria, Counsellor, DLL introduced the special resource person, Dr.Archana Kumari. The resource person in her presentation deliberated on various topics like Traditional media v/s Social Media, Dangers of Mis/Disinformation, Source of information etc. She further deliberated upon various precautions which must be followed before sharing any content/ information on social media. Various queries raised by the students were also addressed by her in detail.

Prof. Rakesh Singh, Convenor, Career Counselling and Placement Cell, GDC, Kathua in his address highlighted the importance of workshop and expressed the hope that such type deliberations enable the students to understand and interpret the complex messages they receive from print, electronic and digital media. The formal vote of thanks was presented by Dr. Pankaj Gupta.
