ITAE Winter School 2021
Yulia Danilova, a 4th year student at the Physico-Technical Institute of PetrSU, is a participant in the winter school of the Institute of Thermal and Nuclear Power Engineering (ITAE).
The ITAE Winter School 2021 was held on the basis of the Institute of Thermal and Nuclear Energy of the NRU “MPEI”. The School of Thermal and Nuclear Energy is a scientific and educational, research program for 4th year undergraduate students, organized with the aim of gaining practical skills in their specialty.
The ITAE Winter School 2021 was attended by university delegations from all over Russia, including PetrSU. Yulia Danilova, a 4th year student of the direction “Heat Power Engineering and Heat Engineering”, presented her report.
The event included speeches by representatives of the State Scientific Center of the Russian Federation “Troitsk Institute for Innovative and Thermonuclear Research” (JSC “SSC RF TRINITY”), the experimental design bureau “Gidropress”, “ZiO Podolsk” “Atomenergoproekt” and others. They talked about what the company does, about the specifics of work, what vacancies are relevant, what are the conditions of employment or acceptance for practice. There were also theoretical lectures on the operation of nuclear power plants, designs of nuclear reactors, combined cycle plants, teamwork, career guidance and others.
The program was intense. 2 excursions were held: to ZiO-Podolsk and a training cogeneration plant at MPEI.
I was very impressed when I saw what an economizer for a cat looks like with a capacity of 95 tons of steam per hour. A picture in a textbook is one thing, and how everything looks in reality is completely different. I didn’t even think they were so huge. And at the MPEI mini-CHPP we were taken to all departments, told in detail what and how it works. Again, it is one thing to see it in pictures of textbooks, and another thing to see it live, some things from the course “Boiler Plants” are linked into a single picture, said Julia.
Within the framework of the winter school, the solution of the case from ZiO-Podolsk “Build your own nuclear power plant” was envisaged.
The participants were divided into teams, they were given maps of Russia with the plotting of CHP, GRES and NPP, a map of industrial enterprises, data on already existing NPPs and a logistic map. It was necessary to choose a site for the construction of a nuclear power plant, justify your choice and answer a number of questions. For example, why a nuclear power plant can be called green energy, how the construction of a nuclear power plant will help the region and affect its ecology, what new technologies are being developed in the nuclear industry, and others.
Julia was in a team with the guys from RUDN University and turned out to be the only power engineer among machine builders.
We decided that we would build a nuclear power plant in the Tomsk region. There was very little time to discuss the cases; I had to find, process, analyze and assimilate a lot of new information in a very short time. We defended the case, in my opinion, well, but we did not take the prize (and it was one). But the very experience of participating in such a task is incredible, says Julia.
