IIT Madras invites applications for its PhD and MS (Research) Programmes throughout the academic year
Chennai: Admission to the Research Programme leading to the degrees of ‘Doctor of Science’ (PhD) and ‘Master of Science by Research’ MS(Research) in Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT-M) is now open throughout the academic year from July 2017 to June 2018 under regular / part-time / external schemes. Earlier, the Institute opened admissions in two phases, July and December.
Selected candidates with appropriate qualifications will be eligible for half-time Teaching Research Assistantship (HTRA) funded by MHRD as well as fellowships from other funding agencies like CSIR, UGC, DST, NBHM, ICMR, ICAR, AICTE etc. Shortlisted candidates will be called for interview and/or test by the Selection Committees of the respective departments from time to time.
In fact, candidates with BE / BTech can apply to pursue PhD in Engineering/Sciences directly through the ‘Direct PhD’ programme. There is also an attractive provision of pursuing MS+PhD dual degree in Engineering through this programme.
Moreover, meritorious MS scholars with CGPA of 8.0 and above are eligible to upgrade to the PhD programme in the same department and will receive two degrees (MS+PhD) on completion of the programme. MS scholars receiving HTRA are eligible for enhanced fellowship after upgradation.
Dean of Academic Research, Prof. Ashok K Mishra said, “We expect the new admission procedure to be more comfortable for the applicants. Results of various research fellowship schemes are announced at various times during the year. Similarly, funding support from research projects can come at any time of the year. Now the students with such fellowships and funding supports do not have to wait for the next advertisement for submitting their applications. The foreign students will also find it easier to apply as the timeline of academic programmes in foreign universities are different.”
Students applying to IIT Madras furthermore have the opportunity to carry out Joint PhD programmes between IITM & various reputed Foreign Universities like Deakin University, Australia, Queensland University of Technology, Australia, National University of Singapore, Singapore, RWTH Aachen University, Germany and Michigan State University, among others.
