Ural federal university: Ural Federal University Scientists Are Working on Carbon Field Creation
Russian carbon polygons received project documentations. New carbon fields was discussed at a meeting of the expert council under the Ministry of Science and Higher Education of the Russian Federation on scientific support for the development of technologies for monitoring carbon balance.
The chairman of the expert council, the head of the Russian Ministry of Education and Science, Valery Falkov, stressed the importance of ensuring the prompt preparation of the sites selected in the regions for the official start of scientific work in the status of polygons.
“The project participants are faced with a serious task – to launch the process of organizing landfills in a short time, start equipping them with the necessary equipment and form cooperation with scientific partners,” the minister stressed.
The Sverdlovsk Region is one of the regions where carbon polygons will be first created.
“The Ural Federal University has joined the federal program and will take part in the creation of not only carbon polygons, but also carbon farms,” notes the first vice-rector of Ural Federal University Sergey Kortov. – This is a very relevant area, which in the next 15–20 years will become one of the tools of competition in the world market: the carbon balance will inevitably be taken into account in the production and export of products. For enterprises, there will be another mechanism for decarbonizing industrial production – the cultivation of plants that absorb carbon dioxide. In turn, universities will have to train specialists for a new industry related to the study and maintenance of the carbon balance”.
According to Sergei Kortov, this area is interdisciplinary and involves close interaction of physicists, chemists, mathematicians, IT specialists, biologists, climatologists. The innovative activity of universities will also receive an additional impetus – a new market for science-intensive products and services will appear.
Recall that in February 2021, the Russian Ministry of Education and Science launched a pilot project to create a network of carbon polygons in the Russian regions with the participation of educational and scientific institutions, regional authorities and business partners.
