UNESCO Consultation in Africa for the preparation of the Global Action Plan for the International Decade of the World’s Indigenous Languages (DILA2022-2032) 25 – 26 May 2021

Dakar: UNESCO, jointly with the African Academy of Languages (ACALAN), is organizing on 25 and 26 May 2021 (10:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. GMT), the Africa regional consultation for the development of the Global Action Plan of the International Decade of the World’s Indigenous Languages (IDIL2022 – 2032).

This consultation, dedicated to the African continent, will bring together a wide range of stakeholders, including experts and representatives from governments, indigenous peoples’ organizations in Africa, institutions and specialized agencies of the African Union, public organizations, universities and members of the Global Task Force for the IDIL2022-2032.

In terms of objectives, the consultative meeting aims, among others, to:

Identify regional strategic objectives, outcomes, and actions, aligned with Africa priorities, for language transmission, documentation, safeguarding, policy development, education, research, and promotion;
Engage in constructive dialogue on indigenous language issues in Africa to strengthen commitments to improve national and regional capacities to support local languages in the context of existing global agendas, including Agenda 2063;
Identify future regional activities which would contribute to the implementation of the Global Action Plan of the IDIL2022-2032.

This meeting represents a major opportunity for actors engaged in language policy development and implementation, as well as those involved in the research, preservation and promotion of indigenous languages in Africa, to contribute to the formulation and integration of priority actions for Africa into the global action plan.
