International Conference on ‘Internationalisation at Home’
Pune: Symbiosis International (Deemed University) (SIU) and Association of Indian Universities (AIU) is jointly organising International Conference on ‘Internationalisation at Home (IaH): Strategies for building global, international and intercultural (GII) competencies’ on April 6th and 7th, 2018 at SIU, Lavale Campus. The event is supported by FICCI.
The inaugural ceremony will be held on April 6th at 11-30am at Lavale campus. Chief Guest on the occasion is Shri. Prakash Javadekar, Hon’ble Minister for Human Resource Development, Government of India. Guests of Honour are Prof. P.B. Sharma, President, AIU and Prof. Furqan Qamar, Secretary General, AIU. Dr. S.B. Mujumdar, Chancellor, SIU will preside over the function.
Prof. Hans de Wit, Director, Center for International Higher Education (CIHE), Lynch School of Education, Boston College will deliver the keynote address on April 6th at 12-00pm at Lavale Campus.
A curtain raiser in the form of a roundtable discussion on ‘Building world class universities through IaH’ will be held before the conference on April 5th from 1-30pm to 5pm.
This is the second international conference organised jointly by AIU and SIU. The conference will advance new dialogues around the subject of building global, international and intercultural competencies. This conference assumes great importance as India has responded to the world rankings phenomenon with national excellence initiatives including the formation of the National Institutional Rankings Framework (NIRF), overall reforms and restructuring of higher education, and the plans for setting up institutes of eminence.

The sub-themes of the conference draw from the different areas institutes must focus on while internationalising their campus and their curriculum. The track sessions are designed around the idea that institutions/stakeholders must be introspective as they devise their strategy to re-define academic and other resources effectively. Tracks will focus on Building Global Competencies for all students and faculty, IaH of the Curriculum and the Campus, Integration of Study Abroad/Work Abroad experiences into the university’s programme/assessments, Building and Managing Diversity in the Classroom, Case Studies from Indian and International universities, and Challenges faced while building these competencies. The conference will also focus on the contribution of internationalisation at home as being a special quality-contributor that spans across all ranking parameters, and not limited to impacting only one parameter.
The conference will be attended by educationists, leaders from institutions, academics, and researchers from around the world. Renowned Indian policy makers, legislators and academics will participate in the discussions.
Additionally, members of many international and regional organizations devoted to internationalisation will also participate, as will representatives of foreign embassies, including consuls and education attaché. It is relatable that delegates from organizations engaged in global academic rankings will share their views in the discussions and workshops, led by Vice Chancellors of Indian and international universities, subject experts in the field of internationalisation of higher education.
