World No-Tobacco Day observed at AMU

ALIGARH: The World No Tobacco Day (WNTD) was observed at different departments of studies, schools and centres of the Aligarh Muslim University in consonance with the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India’s endorsement for observing the special day with the theme “Commit to Quit”.

The Department of Education organized an online meeting urging people to shun smoking and consuming tobacco in any form to save themselves from its after-effects.

Prof (Mrs) Nasrin (Chairperson, Department of Education) administered a pledge on faculty members resolving that “I shall never smoke and consume any type of tobacco products in my life and motivate my family or acquaintances not to smoke or use tobacco products”.

In an online programme at the Department of Psychology, Chairperson, Prof (Mrs) Asma Parveen conducted a pledge committing “we will never smoke or consume any type of tobacco products in my life”. At the Centre of Continuing and Adult Education and Extension, a virtual programme was addressed by Professor Mohammad Gulrez (Director, CCAEE). He underlined the hazards of using tobacco, especially during the pandemic when a weakened immune system and lungs due to the use of tobacco could prove to be fatal.

Professor Gulrez also conducted a pledge in English while Dr Shamim Akhtar read out the pledge in Hindi.

Prof Aysha Munira Rasheed (Deputy Director), Dr Sohail Ahmed, Ms Shahneela Siddiqui, Mr Mohd Shahzad, Mr Akhtar Ali, Mr Faizan Rasheed, Mr Samra Fareed and Mr Suboor Waseem attended the pledge ceremony.

At AMU Girls’ School, Ms Amna Malik (Principal) conducted the pledge online while Ms Arshi Zafar Khan (Vice Principal) supervised the virtual online programme.

Ms Sabiha Khatoon and Ms Tarannum read out the pledge in Hindi and English respectively. Dr Yasir Zafar Khan helped manage the online commemorative programme.

At AMU City Girls’ High School, Dr Mohd Alamgir (Principal) addressed a virtual programme on the occasion and highlighted the dangers of consuming tobacco. He said tobacco consumption is not only dangerous to our health but also has a negative impact on family and society. He said tobacco consumption results in loss of hard-earned money and health and minimises productivity.

Ms Tehmina Ashraf delivered a short speech on ‘Disastrous effect of Tobacco consumption’ while Mrs Farzana Nazeer conducted the programme.

An online pledge for “Non-consumption of Tobacco” was also administered.
