University of Bremen: Labor Minister Hubertus Heil opens new institute

The German Institute for Interdisciplinary Social Policy Research (DIFIS) at the Universities of Bremen and Duisburg-Essen begins its work. Federal Minister Hubertus Heil opens the facility on June 8th. The ministry is funding development and research for five years with around eight million euros.
The institute is to conduct research on future topics of social policy and promote the transfer between science and practice. “It is an important signal that the Federal Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs is promoting the establishment of the German Institute for Interdisciplinary Social Policy Research,” emphasizes the Rector of the University of Bremen, Professor Bernd Scholz-Reiter. “The application of scientific findings from social policy and inequality research in political practice is indispensable.”

Under the title “Corona & beyond”, Federal Labor Minister Hubertus Heil discussed the opening with the Head of DIFIS, Professor Ute Klammer (University of Duisburg-Essen), and the Deputy Head of DIFIS, Professor Frank Nullmeier (SOCIUM Research Center Inequality and Social Policy, University of Bremen) , on the current challenges of social policy – and thus also of social policy research. The event will be streamed live on the internet.
