ECO CLUB, GDC Sidhra organises Intercollege Paper and Cloth Bag Activity to commemorate International Plastic Bag Free Day 2021
Jammu: July 3 marks International Plastic Bag Free Day when the world reminds itself of the importance to reduce the usage of plastic in everyday life, which has otherwise proven to be extremely detrimental to the environment. Every year, this day is observed to create awareness about the threat caused by plastic pollution to the natural environment, be it land or marine life and to eradicate the use of single-use plastic bags.
ECO-Club of Government Degree College Sidhra under the patronage of worthy Principal, Dr. Monika Sharma organised Online Inter-college activity to commemorate “International Plastic Bag Free Day 2021” on July 3, 2021 under the banner of ‘Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav’.
This day encourages the use of eco-friendly products including paper and cloth bags and discourages the usage of single-use plastic bags. Eco Club of the college also organised Paper and cloth bag making Inter-college activity to support the cause.
A number of students from different colleges participated in the activity. The participants were judged by Prof. Shashi Prabha, Associate Professor, Department of English and Dr. Mehmood Ahmed, Head Department of Urdu of the College. The result of the activity was declared on 4th of July 2021.
In the category of making Bags with Cloth, Nanshi Sharma of B.Sc Sem IV, GDC Kathua and Sumriti Raina of M.A Sem I, DDE, University of Jammu were adjudged first while Ritu Devi of B.Ed Sem IV, School of Education, Bhaderwah Campus; Deeksha Thakur of B.A Sem IV, GDC Majalta and Divya Rani of B.Sc Sem IV, GDC Reasi shared the second slot. The third slot was shared by Anjali Sharma of B.Sc Sem II, GDC Samba, Shafeeq Ul Rehman of B.A Sem IV, GDC Sidhra and Paras Mehra of B.Com Sem II, GDC Marh.
In the category of making Bags with Paper, Manjeet Singh and Ritika Jaral of School of Education Bhaderwah Campus were adjudged first. Priya Lakhnotra of B.Sc Sem IV, GDC Reasi and Aadil Ahmed of B.A Sem II, GDC Sidhra shared the second position while the third position was shared by Angraz Singh of B.A Sem IV, GDC Udhampur; Poonam Maurya of B.Com Sem II, GDC Samba and Karsoom Akhtar of B.A Sem II, GDC Sidhra.
Principal, Dr. Monika Sharma congratulated the student participants for their participation in the event with full enthusiasm and working towards this cause. She also stressed upon that there is a dire need to support and outspread the alternatives for single-use plastic bags such as recyclable bags, cloth bags, canvas bags, and a lot more, which may help in saving the environment and animals. The event was organized by Dr. Anshu Gupta, Convener, ECO Club and Head, Department of Environmental Sciences of the college and coordinated by Prof. Deepa Kak and Prof. Meesha Bhagat, members of ECO Club of the college.
