GCW Parade holds series of activities to mark Van Mahotsav Week
JAMMU : Government College for Women held a series of activities to mark Van Mahotsav Week, including online poster and slogan making competition, sharing informative videos and conducting 7- day plantation drive.
NSS UNIT, under the guidance of the Principal of the College, Dr. S.P Sarswat and under the supervision of the NSS Program Officers, Dr. Mohammad Majeed (HoD Urdu department), Dr. Gurpreet Kour (Assistant Professor, Chemistry and Organising Secretary) and Dr. Pervaiz Ahmed (Assistant Professor, Chemistry) organised all the activities.
Faculty and the student body of college evinced great enthusiasm whilst participating in these activities.
Over 200 volunteers from the NSS Unit of the college participated in the plantation drive and planted over 100 saplings in their locality and nearby areas.
The programme continued for seven consecutive days with maximum participation from the students as well as from the faculty.
The main objective of this programme was to promote afforestation in the surroundings and preventing people from deforestation or the clearing of forests or the greenery around them. The Volunteers led an awareness programme in their surroundings areas to apprise the residents about the benefits of planting trees and the hazards of the deforestation.
The week started with the classic art competition, where the students indulged themselves in making posters and slogans promoting afforestation and to honour the Van Mahotsav week. The NSS Unit of college also led a food drive during the Van Mahotsav, thereby providing food essentials to the needy and indigent people and feeding stray animals. More than 20 volunteers conducted these drives in different areas.
Subsequently, on the last day of the Van Mahotsav week, the volunteers shared informative videos and expressed their views on topics such as, “Deforestation: A Threat to Planet Earth” and “How to make smart and eco friendly choices in our day-to-day lives” etc . The week concluded with a vote of thanks from Dr. Gurpreet Kour, to all the participants who showed their support and participation in the programme.
