University of Bremen: The estate of the Egyptologist Adolf Erman is available online

The project began many years ago: in 1966 Anna Maria Schaal, the daughter of Adolf Erman (1854-1937), handed over the estate of the SuUB Bremen. As part of a project funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG), the SuUB has indexed more than 5,000 documents in terms of form and content in the Kalliope estate database. The entire estate was then digitized.

In the extensive estate of the scientist, the change in the subject from a romanticizing occupation to a modern ancient science, which is connected with the life and work of Erman, is reflected. It primarily contains letters and cards to Adolf Erman from various authors from all over the world. They come from the fields of science, museums, monument preservation and administration. The correspondence covers the period from 1875 to 1937. Occasionally, drawings, so-called copies – i.e. reproductions of inscriptions by means of mechanical rubbing on paper – or photos are attached to the correspondence, more often newspaper clippings and business cards. There are also some lecture notes, exercise books, excerpts and preliminary studies for your own work.
