CUO, organised a Special Lecture on Contemporary Issues in Gender and Development

Report by Nishapati Nayak, Koraput: The Department of Sociology, Central University of Orissa, Koraput organized a Special Lecture on ‘Contemporary Issues in Gender and Development’ at its Sunabeda campus on 09.08.2018. On this occasion Prof. Sachidananda Mohanty, Hon’ble Vice-Chancellor inaugurated the seminar as Guest of honour. Prof. Aparna Rayaprol, Professor of Sociology, University of Hyderabad delivered the Special Lecture. Dr. Kapila Khemundu, Head I/C, Department of Sociology, CUO, Koraput delivered the welcome address.

On this occasion Prof. Mohanty and Prof. Rayparol inaugurated the book ‘Social Capital and Biodiversity’ written by Dr. Aditya Keshari Mishra, Faculty Member, Department of Sociology, CUO. Prof. Mohanty congratulated Dr. Mishra for his achievement and motivated other faculty members to engage themselves in such publication work apart from their regular activities.

Prof. Mohanty in his inaugural address highlighted the gender issues as one of the prime barriers for development. He said “any discipline should focus on all round development of personality and how to become employable. All disciplines should be informed by the notion of gender. Disciplinary boundaries must be crossed”. He urged the students to create gender awareness among all to create a healthy society.

In her lecture, Prof. Rayaprol broadly focused on the nature of the progress of development studies from the perspective of gender. She emphasizes on education, work/employment, health and the nature of globalization with a focus on gender in national and global contexts. She highlights the gender division of labour. She said “gender is not something to see separately while talking about development”.

Dr. Aditya Keshari Mishra, Faculty Member, Department of Sociology, gave a brief idea about the book. He mentioned that the book can serve as a comprehensive reference book for the post-graduate and research scholars and it covers several significant themes on environmental studies.

Mr. Niranjan Majhi, student of sociology proposed a formal vote of thanks. Ms. Kajol Bagh, student of sociology compeered the programme. Along with Dr. Sagarika Mishra, Lecture, Department of Sociology, students, scholars, faculty members and staff of the CUO were present on the occasion.
