Siberian Federal University: The School of Mathematics and Computer Science participates in the conference of world-class mathematical centres

World-class math centres have been founded thanks to the Science and Universities national project. They are working to ensure that the Russian Federation is at the forefront of fundamental and applied research in mathematics and related fields. This is the first conference of the centres where participants can exchange their practices and discuss their achievements. Kirill Borisov, deputy director of the Department of State Research and Research and Engineering Policy of the Ministry of Science and Higher Education of the Russian Federation, notes that in recent years the Ministry has been able to build an effective system for supporting mathematics in the Russian Federation. According to Mr Borisov, in addition to four world-class mathematical centres on the basis of eight scientific organizations in the framework of the national project, together with the expert community, they established four methodological mathematical centres and 11 more regional scientific and educational math-centers. In fact, every district in Russia now has a centre of mathematics.

The conference brought together over 600 Russian mathematicians, half of them joined the event online, and guests from 25 countries. The program includes more than 300 face-to-face and online lectures, the event will last until August 13.

The SibFU delegation includes more than 20 participants; among them are Prof. Avgust Tsikh, director of the Centre, Prof. Vladimir Shaydurov, Corresponding Member of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Professor Alexander Shlapunov, associate professors Dmitry Pochekutov, Alexander Mkrtchyan, Roman Ulvert, Stepan Bashmakov, and the best students of the School. Most of the members of the delegation will give their talks at the sections, and young participants also participate in the poster session.

“International and regional Mathematical centres have existed in Russia for several years. The Sirius Research Centre has been operating for the second year. But this year event, which unites all the largest mathematical projects in Russia, is, in fact, the first. I believe that this is a kind of congress of the Central Committee of mathematicians to discuss the results of the five-year plan and synchronize further work, which is very important,” said Stepan Bashmakov, assistant professor of the Department of Algebra and Mathematical Logic, one of the congress participants. “This conference has purely scientific content: important results of key scientific schools that are part of the mathematical centres. And special attention was given to attracting young scientists — here they are in the spotlight, they make up about half of the talks at the working sections, a separate posters section of the conference is for the youth research starting from the Bachelor’s students”.

The conference is held in the framework of the Year of Science and Technology. It was organized by the Sirius Educational Centre with the participation of the Ministry of Science and Higher Education of the Russian Federation and world–class mathematical centres: the Moscow Center for Fundamental and Applied Mathematics, the Steklov Mathematical Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences, the Mathematical Centre in Akademgorodok and Euler International Mathematical Institute.

The participants proposed to hold the mathematical conference once every two years and expressed their hope that in 2023 the event will receive the status of the All–Russian Congress of Mathematicians.
