ADB Appoints New Country Director for Indonesia

JAKARTA: The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has appointed Jiro Tominaga as Country Director for Indonesia. He assumes office today.

Mr. Tominaga will lead ADB operations in Indonesia, manage ADB’s relationship with the government and development partners, and oversee the implementation of ADB’s 2020–2024 country partnership strategy. The strategy aims to help Indonesia emerge stronger from the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) by supporting human development, economic competitiveness, disaster risks management, and environmental sustainability.

“ADB is a long-term development partner of Indonesia,” said Mr. Tominaga. “I look forward to building on our strong partnership and working closely with the government and other stakeholders to support the country’s development agenda. My immediate priority is to assist the government in addressing the health, economic, and social impacts of the pandemic in the short and medium term.”

Mr. Tominaga, a Japanese national, joined ADB in 2015. He was ADB’s Director of Strategy, Policy, and Business Process, and before that, a Principal Planning and Policy Specialist.

Mr. Tominaga began his 30-year career at the Overseas Economic Cooperation Fund of Japan, now the Japan Bank for International Cooperation. He also worked at the Japanese Ministry of Finance and the World Bank. His work focused on the use of information and communication technologies in public service delivery and independent evaluation. He holds a bachelor’s degree in economics from Keio University and a master’s degree in economics from the London School of Economics.

Mr. Tominaga succeeds Winfried Wicklein, who has taken over as ADB’s Deputy Director General for Southeast Asia.

Indonesia is a founding member of ADB and its sixth-largest shareholder. In 2020, ADB committed $3.4 billion in loans and grants to Indonesia, including emergency financing and budget support for the government’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic. ADB’s portfolio in Indonesia covers a wide range of sectors, including renewable energy generation, electricity grid development, financial inclusion, and contingent financing for disaster preparedness.

ADB is committed to achieving a prosperous, inclusive, resilient, and sustainable Asia and the Pacific, while sustaining its efforts to eradicate extreme poverty. Established in 1966, it is owned by 68 members—49 from the region.
