Three Quakers earn Ivy weekly awards
Autumn Leak and Sydney Ormiston of the volleyball team and Matt Leigh of the men’s soccer team have been recognized for their impressive performances over the holiday weekend.
Junior Autumn Leak and freshman Sydney Ormiston of the women’s volleyball team picked up Ivy League Player of the Week and Ivy League Rookie of the Week honors, respectively.
Leak, an outside hitter from Englewood, New Jersey, was named MVP of the Sheraton University City Invitational over the weekend at the Palestra. Across three games against Bucknell, Canisius, and Coppin State, she had 50 kills and a .311 hitting percentage, which helped to propel Penn to victory in all three contests and the tournament. She had 16 kills on Friday in the Red & Blue’s 3-0 win over Bucknell, 13 kills in Saturday morning’s 3-0 triumph over Canisius, and a career-high 21 kills in Saturday evening’s 3-1 defeat of Coppin State.
Ormiston, a setter from Murrieta, California, was named to the All-Tournament team. She amassed 90 assists: 28 against Bucknell, 31 against Canisius, and 31 against Coppin State.
Senior forward Matt Leigh of the men’s soccer team was also named Ivy League Player of the Week.
In Penn’s 3-2 win over Fairleigh Dickinson on Friday in Teaneck, New Jersey, the Holliston, Massachusetts, native scored two first-half goals. He was assisted by senior midfielder Ben Stitz on the first and junior midfielder Jack Rosener on the second.
On Labor Day against Colgate at Rhodes Field, Leigh assisted on Stitz’s goal in the 53rd minute. The Quakers blanked the Raiders 3-0. Midfielder Joey Bhangdia scored two goals.
Next up for the volleyball team is the DePaul Invitational on Friday and Saturday in Chicago. The men’s soccer team battles in-state rival Penn State on Friday at Rhodes Field.
