CKD patients get Tunnelled Catheter Placement at JNMC

Aligarh : Fourteen-year-old, Faiz and 51-year-old, Mukesh suffered sleep problems, puffy eyes, muscle cramping, swelling, frequent urge to urinate, poor appetite, fatigue, high blood pressure, loss of appetite and malaise. Their problems didn’t just stop there.

Faiz and Mukesh found out that their kidneys were failing and that they would need renal transplants.

Exacerbating their ordeal, doctors examining Faiz and Mukesh informed them that like all the other Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) patients, kidney transplantations for them could only be planned after they go through—a thrice-a-week, Hemodialysis process done after internal jugular and femoral permcath placements.

“Faiz and Mukesh had lost all hopes, until they reached the Nephrology and Medicine Unit at the Department of Medicine, Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College (JNMC), Aligarh Muslim University (AMU)”, said Dr Saif Quaiser of the Department of Medicine.

He successfully performed ‘Tunnelled Catheter (Permcath) Placement’ on both of them.

“Both Faiz and Mukesh are now revivified and look forward, resolutely with a new lease on life. They can now plan renal transplants”, said Dr Saif.

Dr Anjum Mirza Chughtai, Chairman, Department of Medicine emphasised that the Tunnelled Catheter (Permcath) Placement is a complicated procedure done at a few select centres.

He added: “Despite Covid pandemic increasing the waiting time for such procedures across the country, the Department of Medicine at JNMC has been providing relief to people suffering CKD and other patients. We have highly skilled doctors with expertise in interventional nephrology, hemodialysis, peritoneal dialysis, pre-renal transplant work-up and screening and post-renal transplant follow-up and management”.

Congratulating the Department of Medicine doctors, AMU Vice Chancellor, Prof Tariq Mansoor said, “JNMC health workers have been working hard to conduct complicated procedures even as many hospitals were deferring surgeries to future dates due to Covid waves.
