University of Science and Technology of China: 2021 JST Sakura Science Exchange Program Held Online

With the support of vice-professor TANG Suhua from the University of Electro-Communications (UEC), an online exchange event of Sakura Science Program was held by USTC and UEC, from September 25th to 26th. More than seventy teachers and students across institutes participated in seminars and exchange programs, discussing state-of-the-art technology regarding future societies.

Hosted by Prof. CAI Yifu, the opening ceremony began with Prof. Kennsou Takahashi from UEC and Prof. YANG Jie from USTC reviewing the cooperation between UEC and USTC, and attaching great expectations to the post-pandemic relationship of two universities. After which vice-professor TANG Suhua briefed the event, encouraging students to seize this chance to the fullest. Five lectures on Artificial Intelligence (AI), robotics, Internet of Things (IoT), deep learning and big data respectively were conducted in the following two days.

The first lecture, on IoT’s high reliable communications (HRC) and innovations, was given by Dr. SHAN Lin from the National Institute of Information and Communications Technology (NICT). Focused on IoT’s core technological concepts, international standardization, innovative bits and applications, the lecture exposed obstacles about the physical layer and medium access control (MAC) of HRC, and provided students with basic recognition and understandings of the very subject.

Dr. LIU Zhi, a vice-professor from UEC gave the second lecture, on virtual reality and point cloud video streaming, featuring related challenges and corresponding solutions, as video streaming played an essential role during the pandemic.

The third lecture, hosted by Dr. HAN Chenggao from UEC, centered on complementary code division multiple access along with its realization based on rapid transformation (RT). It introduced new wireless accessing methods aimed at 6G technologies and hardware realization based on RT.

On communication-perception fusion (CPF), USTC’s vice-professor Dr. CHEN Li hosted the fourth lecture, discussing millimeter-wave link expenses reduction by perceptional data, collecting multi-dimensional data by synesthetic cooperation, and synesthetic, integrated beam-forming designs, corresponding to the three ways of CPF.

Dr. TANG Suhua presented the last lecture, with the topic being extensible IoT’s reliability based on over-the-air computation. Efficient collection and processing of sense data based on this very way were introduced, along with constructing relevant content of an extensible IoT. Solutions towards enhancing the reliability of wireless transmission were foci of the lecture.

Much enthusiastically were the students when asking questions at the end of each lecture, and an atmosphere abundant in discussions could be found in the meeting room. Encouraged by Prof. TANG Suhua the students at both ends communicated actively on their major, leisures and experiences of overseas studying.

This exchange event of the JST Sakura Science Program succeeded in constructing a cloud academic platform between USTC and UEC, in briefing frontier information and in discussing the optimization of further activities. Groundworks regarding USTC’s fellowship with Japan and international exchanges improvements were also laid as a result of the event.
