Ecole Polytechnique: A new scientific interest group for additive manufacturing

A national initiative led by the CNRS, the “High Energy in Additive Manufacturing” scientific interest group has been created under the direction of Éric Charkaluk, a professor at X and an expert in additive manufacturing. Its aim is to increase the diffusion of the uses of additive manufacturing by removing the barriers faced by industry.

Mainly used in numerous industrial sectors such as transport, space, biomedical and defense, additive manufacturing is constantly developing. In order to provide solutions to the problems of developing additive manufacturing within the various industries, twelve CNRS research laboratories and a department of the Office national d’études et de Recherches Aérospatiales (Onera) have formed the Scientific Interest Group “High energy in additive manufacturing “. It is headed by Éric Charkaluk, CNRS Research Director at the Solid Mechanics Laboratory (LMS *), professor at the École Polytechnique and expert in additive manufacturing.

The GIS is mainly interested in the 3D printing of metal and ceramics, materials that are widely used in industry. At present, additive manufacturing makes it possible to obtain objects with new properties that cannot be achieved by conventional processes. Developing its uses and removing the barriers to its widespread use would also make numerous supply chains more resilient, particularly in the context of crises.

Six thematic groups make up the GIS, each theme being co-piloted by two laboratories. At the École polytechnique, two laboratories are involved: the Center de Mathematiques Appliques (CMAP *), with Grégoire Allaire as scientific leader of the thematic group on numerical simulation and optimization, and the LMS with Éric Charkaluk, director of the Group.
