SKKU: Myeongnyun Seowon opening ceremony was held
– expected to contribute to the development of Korean studies through the operation of programs to enhance classical Chinese language competency so that students can obtain the ability to translate and understand classical Chinese
– strengthen competitiveness through collaboration between five departments in the Korean studies field of SKKU (Confucian/Korean/Classical Chinese/History/East Asian Studies)
The opening ceremony of Myeongnyun Seowon (Classical Chinese Training Institute) was successfully held on November 11, 2021. About 20 people including Dong-Ryeol Shin (President Dong-Ryeol Shin), Joon-mo Cho (Executive vice president of Humanities and Social Sciences Campus and vice president of Academic Affairs), Ki-Heon Kwon (Dean of Graduate School), Jeong Geun Shin (Dean of College of Confucian Studies & Eastern Philosophy), Kyongsok Lim (Dean of College of Liberal Arts and Director of Myeongnyun Seowon), Kyeongho Kim (Director of Academy of East Asian Studies), and students attended to celebrate the opening ceremony.
Myeongnyun Seowon was founded on August 30, 2021 after four preparatory committee meetings since the announcement of proposal this April. It was established to help researchers majoring in humanities, social sciences, and natural sciences to read classical Chinese in cooperation with the college of liberal arts, college of Confucian Studies & Eastern Philosophy, and the Academy of East Asian Studies.
The opening ceremony was held in the order of the unveiling ceremony of the signboard, the opening speech of the director of Myeongnyun Seowon, the congratulatory speech of president, and speeches of Dean of Confucian Studies & Eastern Philosophy and Director of Academy of East Asian Studies and the introduction of its progress.
Kyongsok Lim, the director of Myeongnyun Seowon, said his aspiration by saying “For the development of the field of Korean studies, we have entered the stage of interpreting classical Chinese on our own and release its universal value. We will do our best to take the lead in enhancing the research capabilities of classical Chinese and fostering future researchers through the operation of various programs covering the curriculum and non-curriculum.”
President Dong-Ryeol Shin said, “It is more meaningful that five departments in the field of Korean studies in our university collaborated to create the Myeongnyun Seowon and it can be said to be an exemplary case of convergence education. We hope that Myeongnyun Seowon be a great step forward in promoting humanities in East Asia as well as in Korea, and we will continue to pay attention and support to enhance the honor and reputation of the humanities field of our university.”
Myeongnyun Seowon aims to cultivate future researchers in the humanities field based on △classical Chinese research capabilities, △strengthen competitiveness through collaboration with BK21 educational research group in the field of Korean Studies, and present new methodologies for classical research and education.
