University unveils commemorative plaque in memory of those lost to cancer

A commemorative plaque dedicated to people who have passed away from cancer has been unveiled at a university campus.

The Lord Mayor of Birmingham, Councillor Muhammad Afzal, attended a memorial service at Birmingham City University’s City South Campus, where the landmark plaque was revealed for the first time.

The plaque, which was created by technicians in the University’s Faculty of Arts, Design and Media, is set to be installed alongside a memorial tree which has been planted on the Campus’ grounds, to pay tribute to loved ones who have been lost.

The memorial tree, a Nordmann Spruce, was planted last month by the University’s team of gardeners, who will maintain it.

During the memorial ceremony, University Chaplain Sr Christina McCann and Revd (Squadron Leader) Adrian Klos, spoke in front an audience of assembled guests to mark the occassion.

Professor Ian Blair, Pro Vice-Chancellor and Executive Dean for Birmingham City University’s Faculty of Health, Education and Life Sciences, said: “This event is an opportunity for people to reflect on those they have lost during the year or in previous years, and is poignant as we have lost a number of close colleagues to cancer during the time that I’ve been here.

The Lord Mayor enjoyed a tour of the facilities at City South Campus, home to the University’s health and life science courses, and was presented with a gift at the service, as well as signing the memorial book.

The planting of the memorial tree and unveiling of the plaque follows a longstanding tradition of the University’s City South Campus celebrating those lost to cancer, following its Tree of Light Ceremony.
