Shiv Nadar University Hosts the 6th Indian National Speed-Cubing Championship

Greater Noida: Shiv Nadar University (a comprehensive, multidisciplinary, research-focused and student-centric university) concluded the sixth edition of the Indian National Speed-cubing Championship, country’s biggest Rubik’s Cube competition. The event held from 12th to 14th April 2019 was organised in association with the World Cube Association (WCA), the International governing body for speed-cubing. The championship which was open to individuals from across age groups was attended by 291 people from over 200 institutes and universities across the country.

The winner details are as follows:

Ujjawal Pabreja of Netaji Subhash Institute of Technology was the overall winner of the championship who solved a 3x3x3 Rubik’s Cube in 7.76 seconds. This was the best score of the championship.
Arnav Arora of Amity International School, Noida, set a new national record by solving a 5x5x5 Cube in 49.27 seconds, beating the previous record of 49.81 seconds
Kunal Oak of St. Stephan’s College, set a new national record by solving a 7x7x7 Cube in 2 minutes 34.89 seconds, beating the previous record of 2 minutes 36.77 seconds

There are a total of 18 different cubing events recognised by the WCA. These include the regular 3x3x3 Rubik’s cube, Rubik’s cube blindfolded and Rubik’s cube with feet, to name a few. All 18 events were included as part of the Indian Nationals 2019.

Rubik’s cube is a mathematical puzzle which can be solved by deploying a mathematical group theory. To solve the cube, participants were required to arrange each of its squares in a single colour on each of its sides. Speed-cubing is the process of solving a Rubik’s Cube in as fast a time as possible. The winners in each category were rewarded with cash prizes along with medals and trophies.

Shiv Nadar University has organized two cubing competitions in the past, i.e. SNU Open 2017 and SNU Open 2018, which were recognized by WCA and received huge participation.
