EVM cannot be hacked, system is completely safe: Dr. Trivedi
'Friday Dialogue' organised at IIMC on the topic ‘Election Reforms’
New Delhi : EVM is the best option for fair and transparent elections, said former State Election Commissioner of Chhattisgarh and retired IAS official, Dr. Sushil Trivedi.
“If there was a possibility for manipulating EVMs, no government would have been defeated,” he said. He said pointing fingers at EVMs casts doubt on the impartiality of the Election Commission. Dr. Trivedi was speaking at the Indian Institute of Mass Communication’s (IIMC) ‘Friday Dialogue’ session on Friday. Prof. Sanjay Dwivedi, the Institute’s Director General, was also present on this occasion.
Expressing his views on the topic, ‘Election Reform’, Dr. Trivedi said that the Election Commission of India is conducting the election work in many countries of the world. India’s EVMs are also used in these elections. There has not been any complaint from anywhere. He said that before the use of EVMs in elections, there are many levels of investigation. It is sealed in front of the polling agents before voting. EVMs are shown even before the counting of votes begins. Thus, there is no question of error at any level. The one who loses the election blames the EVMs.
Increased participation of women in elections
According to the former state election commissioner of Chhattisgarh, promotion of money during elections gives rise to all kinds of corruption. There are many issues like reforms related to electoral spending and making politics crime free, on which the Election Commission of India has been working for the last several years. He said that every vote is important in the election. The population of women in proportion to men in our country is less, but today the participation of women in elections is much higher than that of men.
Election is the ‘lifeline’ of democracy
Dr. Trivedi said that the Election Commission of India is the most powerful election commission in the world. Indian democracy is known as the best system of governance in the world and reliable elections are the ‘lifeline’ of democracy. He said that as a country progresses, many old and new challenges emerge, which motivate the Election Commission to take swift and decisive decisions. The misuse of money and muscle power to influence voters is a matter of concern, but the judiciary has always worked to protect democracy.
