Women’s Day at AMU

 

Aligarh : Faculty members and students of the Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) called for a more gender-equal world and to renew commitments on gender equality as the strong foundation for achieving the Sustainable Development Goals in the International Women’s Day Celebrations on the theme, ‘Gender Equality Today for a Sustainable Tomorrow’.

“In the panel discussion on ‘Ideas of Reason, Choice and Justice: Are they interpreted differently for woman?’ of the University Debating and Literary Club (UDLC), Prof Aysha Munira (Department of English), Dr Nafis Faizi (Department of Community Medicine), Dr Tarushikha Sarvesh (Advanced Centre for Women’s Studies) and Syed Salman Abbas (Department of Foreign Languages) shed light on gender inequality and theories of justice”, said Dr Sadaf Fareed (President, UDLC).

We need to create an environment where all people including women can make confident choices, said Prof Aysha.

Agreeing with Prof Aysha’s remarks, Dr Nafis Faizi reflected: We need to make sure that women can make their choices.

Dr Tarushikha Sarvesh pointed out that women should never be put in positions where they have to trade justice for security.

Justice and security should both be available to women, she added.

Syed Salman said, the liberty of women is taken away when they are kept in barriers.

Prof F S Sherani (Coordinator, Cultural Education Centre) delivered the welcome address.

Md Sabeeh Ahmad introduced the speakers and Oroosa Anwar moderated the programme.

In the online conference on ‘Women in Management: Trends, Issues and Challenges’ of the Department of Business Administration to mark the Women’s Day celebrations, speakers brought attention to the role of women leaders in supporting employee well-being, diversity and equity and acknowledging women as engines of economic and social growth.

The Chief Guest, Dr Sayalee Gankar (Vice Chancellor, DY Patil University, Pune) spoke on the collaborative and sensitive traits of women and discussed achievements of Kamala Harris, Indira Gandhi, Sirimavo Bhandaranaike, Sheikh Hasina and Margaret Thatcher among others.

Presiding over the programme, AMU Vice Chancellor, Prof Tariq Mansoor praised the role of Indian rural women in the Indian economy and their exemplary work in agriculture, dairy farming and animal husbandry.

He discussed the contributions of Kalpana Chawla, Mother Teresa, Gita Gopinath, Arundhati Bhattacharya, Indra Nooyi and Roshni Nadar and talked about changes for women in countries like Saudi Arabia, Oman and Kuwait.

Prof Salma Ahmed (Dean, Faculty of Management Studies and Research) discussed how women are breaking barriers and stereotypes with their opinions.

“But still many women are left to make tough choices between professional careers and personal lives. We need to encourage women from all walks of life to believe in their abilities”, she said.

Prof Jamal Ahmad Farooqui (Guest of Honor and Chairman, Department of Business Administration) discussed the percentage of women in management and their contributions.

“Resources should be attributed equally to men and women as nearly half of the population comprises women,” he said.

In the online technical sessions, Prof Anita Singh (Sharda University, Greater Noida) and Prof Ruchi Kakkar Gupta (Shaheed Bhagat Singh College, University of Delhi) discussed women entrepreneurship, women in academia, women in conflict zones, women leadership, gender equality and sustainability and gender diversity and organisational performance.

Sameen Khan and Dr Sarika Tomar from the Jamia Millia Islamia (New Delhi) won the best paper award with a cash prize of Rs 5, 000.

Researches from Jamia Millia Islamia (New Delhi), Jamia Hamdard (New Delhi), GD Goenka University (Gurugram), Chitkara University (Punjab), Integral University (Lucknow), Sridaro Caculo College of Commerce and Management Studies (Goa), Mohammad Ali Jauhar University (Rampur) and Galgotias University (Greater Noida) presented papers in the conference. Papers were also presented by AMU researchers from the Departments of Business Administration (Kishanganj Centre), Psychology and Community Medicine and the Advanced Centre for Women’s Studies.

Prof Feza Tabassum Azmi presented the valedictory function report.

Dr Zareen Husain Farooq conducted the inaugural function. Dr Tariq Aziz and Zainab Fatma Bilgrami extended the vote of thanks.

Faculty members of the Department of Amraz-e-Niswan-wa-Atfal observed the International Women’s Day with a free health camp at the Madrasa Ummahatul Momineen (Girls Inter College) at the Pahasu House. The camp was held in line with National Commission for Indian System of Medicine (NCISM) guidelines for ‘Azadi Ka Amrit Mohatsav’.

Prof Suboohi Mustafa (Chairperson, Department of Amraz-e-Niswan-wa-Atfal) and Dr Fahmeeda Zeenat spoke on the usefulness of Unani medicine for the health of women.

In the online lecture of the Department of Amraz-e-Niswan-wa-Atfal to mark the occasion, Dr Faiza Abbasi (Director, UGC HRD Centre) spoke on ‘Equity vs Equality’.

Dr Fahmeeda conducted the programme and Dr Abiha Ahmad Khan extended the vote of thanks.

At the residential girls hostel, Begum Azeezun Nisa Hall, a party-dressing contest of Non-Teaching female employees was held to observe the occasion.

Prof Subuhi Khan (Hall Provost) discussed why equal rights and opportunities are necessary to women empowerment.

She also recited Kaifi Azmi’s poem, ‘Aurat’.

Dr Faiza Abbasi (Director, HRD Centre) stressed the need for providing the underprivileged women with adequate skills training.

Prof Saira Mehnaz (Department of Community Medicine) discussed the importance of health and hygiene for healthy life.

Dr Ghazala Yasmin (Department of Applied Mathematics) spoke on women empowerment.

Resident students of the Hall presented a skit on ‘Women in Progress’.

Dr Fauzia Faridi conducted the programme.
