Retirement of Professor Andrew Walker – Pro Vice-Chancellor and President, Monash University Malaysia
Monash University has announced the retirement of Professor Andrew Walker, Pro Vice-Chancellor and President of Monash University Malaysia.
Professor Walker joined Monash University Malaysia in October 2016 as Vice-President (Academic) before being appointed Interim Pro Vice-Chancellor and President (Monash University Malaysia) in April 2017 and then Pro Vice-Chancellor and President (Monash University Malaysia) in November of the same year.
Throughout his tenure, Professor Walker has focused on developing the Malaysia campus as a platform for Monash University’s engagement with Southeast Asia. He has set ambitious targets for innovation and excellence in education, research and administration, and has positioned the campus as one of the most outstanding universities in Malaysia. In his leadership of the campus, Professor Walker has brought his significant expertise on Southeast Asia, built from his personal and academic engagement in and commitment to the region.
Professor Walker led Monash University Malaysia during its transition to sole ownership by Monash University in 2020, following 21 years of joint venture arrangements between Monash University and the Sunway Group. Over the past two years, he has guided the campus through the COVID-19 crisis, delivering outstanding results in very challenging circumstances.
President and Vice-Chancellor Professor Margaret Gardner AC said: “As a result of his achievements, Professor Walker will leave Monash University Malaysia very well placed for future success as an integral component of a global Monash and an outstanding example of a research-intensive international campus.
“In addition to his excellent leadership of the Malaysia campus, Professor Walker has made significant contributions to the wider Monash community as a valuable member of the senior leadership team. On behalf of the University, I thank Professor Walker for his dedication, professionalism and exceptional contribution to Monash,” said Professor Gardner.
Professor Walker will conclude his time at Monash on 29 July after almost six years of outstanding service.
