AMU Doctor delivers talk on ‘Hard to Heal Wounds’

Aligarh : Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) faculty member from the Department of Plastic Surgery, Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College (JNMC), Dr Mohammed Fahud Khurram deliberated the structured and comprehensive approach to wound management.

He was delivering an invited online talk on ‘Hard to Heal Wounds: A Holistic Approach’ in the Annual Conference of Bangladesh Society of Plastic Surgeons.

“Even with increasing knowledge and the development of more sophisticated interventions, many doctors and clinicians encounter wounds that are ‘hard-to-heal’ where, despite best efforts; wound healing is prolonged or never achieved. While some attention has been placed on understanding the biological factors influencing delayed healing, relatively little has been placed on the psychosocial factors involved”, said Dr Khurram while giving a rundown on the factors that may have an impact on healing.

He provided an outline of the process of recognising a ‘hard-to-heal’ wound and presented a useful checklist to allow for the early identification.

“Ideally healing progression should be predicted by regular wound assessment and wound size management,” said Dr Khurram.

He also spoke on how infections, abnormal or persistent inflammations and exposed bone or tendons can lead to delay in wound healing.

“It is always important to get the basics right and recognize and address potential barriers to healing early in the treatment cycle. We must re-evaluate the assessment and diagnosis, confirm that treatment is both appropriate and has been applied correctly and use advanced products to address specific wound problems”, Dr Khurram stressed.

The conference, inaugurated by Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, had speakers from India, UK, Canada, Singapore and other countries.
