The Department of English organizes induction programme
ALIGARH: The Department of English, Aligarh Muslim University organized Deeksharambh, a student induction programme for the newly admitted students of MA (English) and MA (English Language Teaching). The students were given an overview of university life, the historical significance of the university, its founder and the department. They were also introduced to the curricular and co-curricular activities, coursework and the university culture.
In her welcome address, Prof Samina Khan (Coordinator, Student Induction Programme), said that Deeksharambh was conducted in compliance with the guidelines proposed by the UGC. She said that more programmes will be organized to familiarize students with the university life and they will be provided opportunity to interact with eminent personalities and alumni of the university.
While interacting with the students, Prof Mohammad Asim Siddiqui (Chairperson, Department of English) reiterated the dynamic role of Sir Syed Ahmad Khan, the founder of AMU, in the promotion of education.
“We are proud of the fact that we are studying in an institution established down by this great visionary,” said Prof Siddiqui, adding that Sir Syed was one of the most enlightened persons in South Asia in his times.
Prof Seemin Hasan (former Chairperson) highlighted the historical anecdotes and achievements of the department and urged the students to “speak out and discuss problems with teachers, read a lot, listen contently and with curiosity, make use of every opportunity, assimilate knowledge and never let failure overpower”.
A ‘Virtual Tour’ was prepared by MA (IV Semester) and BA (IV and VI Semesters) showcasing various locations within the Department of English like the Seminar Library, Archive Room, Language Lab, Chairperson’s office, etc.
Prof M Rizwan Khan (former Chairperson) said that describing the influence and importance of the Aligarh Muslim University is similar to limiting the unlimited. He shed light on the high ranks AMU has attained in recent years.
Prof ShaheenaTarannum and Prof Shagufta Imtiaz elaborated the significance of MA (English) and MA (ELT) programmes.
Prof ShaheenaTarannum discussed the revision of syllabi in 2019-20 to make students aware of the latest additions to English studies.
Dr Kishwar Zafir (Coordinator, Timetable Committee) highlighted the key points of the timetable and the efforts put in by the faculty members to make it flawless.
Mr Mohd. Ahmar Alvi (Convener, Student Induction Programme) guided the students on how to surf and find important information on the department’s webpage.
A PowerPoint presentation prepared by research scholars at the department highlighting the faculty members and their areas of specialization was also shown.
