Delhi witnesses a unique movement by millennial students on 150th Gandhi Jayanti

New Delhi: Mahatma Gandhi once famously said, “The future depends on what you do today”. Taking inspiration from these powerful words and understanding that the world’s future is in the hands of today’s generation, students of Pearl Academy have started a unique movement in Delhi.

On the 150th birth anniversary celebration of Mahatma Gandhi, students of Pearl Academy created an art installation, depicting the historic Dandi March to freedom. The installation will be inaugurated by activist and politician, Smt. Meenakshi Lekhi, at the Delhi Charkha Museum today.

Pearl Academy’s School of Fashion led by Antonio Maurizio Grioli has also put up 150 charkhas at Select City Walk, which is amongst the favorite hang-out points for the city’s youth, to invite them to spin khadi yarn. Maurizio believes that involving youth is the best way to initiate conversations and actions around the challenges our society and the world at large face today.

“On Gandhiji’s 150th birth anniversary, these 150 charkhas spinning together are the voice of this proud young nation raring to go but still grounded in his teachings of persistence towards a sustainable existence”, Maurizio added.

To create excitement and a dialogue amongst millennials about sustainability, which is essential to save the planet, the alumni of Pearl Academy presented a unique fashion show in the city. They showcased daily wearable and yet fashionable garments made from Khadi fabric. Organized at Select City Walk for maximum public viewing, the fashion show was highly appreciated and initiated conversations around how sustainability can be trendy.

Maurizio believes that “In order to design the future, it is very important to take lessons from the past and India has always advocated that”.
