Week Long De-Addiction Campaign concludes at GDC Udhampur
UDHAMPUR : The weeklong long De-Addiction Campaign concluded with an awareness rally at Government Degree College Udhampur, here today.
A large number of students participated in the rally and spread awareness about the damaging consequences of drug abuse. The students also raised slogans and took a pledge to keep this evil at bay. The event was organized by the Department of Psychology and the Center for Counseling and Mental Health Intervention Services under the Aegis of Internal Quality Assurance Cell of the College.
Principal of the College, Prof. (Dr.) Romesh Chander Gupta while flagging off the rally advised the students to take inspiration from the events and activities conducted as part of the campaign. He gave the students the mantra of “Drug is the plague of Youth”, and said that the students should exert their energy in sports and physical exercise in addition to academics, as a fit mind resides in a fit body. He reiterated that students of today are the future of the country, and strong youth today will lead to a better tomorrow for our great nation. He lauded the tireless efforts of the Department of Psychology, and said that Dr. Manisha Sarup Kohli along with her team had organized a wonderful event, and said that such events should be held regularly for the benefit of the students.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Manisha Sarup Kohli, Head, Department of Psychology and Coordinator, Center for Counseling and Mental Health Intervention Services said that addiction is not just a physical affliction but also a psychological one, and combating drug abuse effectively requires a multifaceted approach. She advised the students to lead healthy lifestyles, to remain stress free and to focus on their studies and to take help of parents, teachers and guardians in case of any problems which they may face. Dr. Kohli reminded the students that even though youth may turn to drugs as a means of escaping problems, drug addiction is not the solution, but rather the doors to a dystopia that can ruin their life forever.
The workshop consisted of daily awareness activities which highlighted the impact and consequences of drug abuse, and also informed the students about remedies, treatments and therapies available to those who have fallen victim to drug abuse.
Pertinent to mention here that during weeklong campaign a series of activities have been conducted which includes group discussion, symposium, Ribbon day, Signature campaign wherein more than one thousand signatures were collected, and a pledge was undertaken by students against drug use and positive outlook on life besides Slogan writing competition in which 57 students participated. Sunita Thakur secured first position in the event, whereas Aparna Bhardwaj, Divyansh Sharma and Adil Hussain secured second positions. Third position was secured by Sunali Jamwal, while Pankaj Katoch and Prerna secured consolation positions. Dr. Ravinder Kumar, Prof. Sanjeev Kumar and Prof. Sarita Parihar were judges for the event. The Drug De- addiction Campaign ended with Nukkad Natak on 28-05-2022, in which the effects of drug abuse were depicted.
An educational film on mental health issues was also shown to the students to educate them about mental wellness and healthy living. The events witnessed enthusiastic participation of students in large numbers.
Dr. Manisha Sarup Kohli was the convener of the workshop, whereas Dr. Samta Sharma, Dr. Romesh Kumar Sharma, Prof. Sanjay Kumar, Dr. Archana Gupta, Prof. Reena Bhagat and Prof Ayushi Grover were part of the Organizing Team. Student members of the organizing committee included Prerna, Mohit Verma, Ritik Anand and Mrityunjay.
