World Environment Day at AMU
Aligarh : Awareness programmes to make sure people do not turn a blind eye towards major environmental issues were held at various departments, faculties and schools of Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) to observe the World Environment Day.
At the Department of Philosophy, students and research scholars created posters on the Environment Day theme, ‘One Life, One Earth’ calling for systematic actions to reduce carbon footprint.
MA student Syed Barooqa won the poster-making contest with Rubab Noorie (MA student) and Shagun Varshney (B A student) finishing second and third respectively. The program was chaired by Dr Aquil Ahmed (Chairman, Department of Philosophy), Prof Latif Hussain Shah Kazmi and Dr Shahidul Hoque (Program Coordinator).
“The celebration of this day provides us with an opportunity to broaden the basis for an enlightened opinion and responsible conduct by individuals, enterprises, and communities in preserving and enhancing the environment”, said Dr Aquil Ahmad (Chairman).
Prof Latif Hussain Shah Kazmi spoke on the significance of philosophy in protecting, preserving and promoting a sustainable environment.
Dr Shahidul Hoque extended the vote of thanks and Eram Fatima conducted the programme.
Faculty members pledged to protect the environment and short videos on measures to restore the environment were also screened.
Faculty members of the Centre of Agricultural Education, Faculty of Agricultural Sciences planted tree saplings and delivered lectures on the importance of environment protection, while the students participated in essay, quiz, painting and poster competitions on the theme, ‘One Life, One Earth’.
In the keynote address, Prof Rais Ahmad (Dean, Faculty of Agriculture Sciences) discussed necessary steps for sustainable development and environmental protection.
He said: Sustainable development embraces environmental, social and economic objectives, to deliver long-term equitable growth which will benefit the current and future generations.
Prof Farzana Alim (Chairperson, Department of Home Science) delineated the role of waste management in environmental health.
Prof P Q Rizvi, (Chairman, Department of Plant Protection) pointed out the role of humans in the environmental degradation and pressed for protection of biodiversity.
Prof Iqbal Ahmad (Department of Agricultural Microbiology) spoke on health and environment.
Dr Faheem Ahamad, Dr Mohd Talha Ansari, Dr Majhrool Hak Ansari, Dr Zeba Khan, Dr Tahir M Chauhan, Dr Arshi Jamil, Dr Md Ramjan and Dr Tejbal Singh discussed initiatives for building a more sustainable economy and reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
Dr Faheem Ahamad extended the vote of thanks.
Mohd Raghib and Upasana were the respective winner and runner up of the poster making contest held to observe the World Environment Day at the Malappuram Centre of the University.
Umair Owais succeeded in the English poetry contest with Aina Islam finishing second and Tarannum Jahan was declared the winner of Hindi poetry in the programme conducted in collaboration of the Literary Club, Malappuram Centre and Bhoomitrasena Club.
Students also participated in a speech contest on ‘Role of Literature in Environmental Awareness: An Analysis of Cli-fi (Climate Fiction)’ at the Department of Law, Malappuram Centre.
Dr Shahnawaz Ahmad Malik drew attention to the Article 51 A (G) of the Indian constitution which deals with the duty of the citizen to protect the environment.
Dr Jameela T (Teacher-in-charge, Literary Club) highlighted how sustainable development and climate action are vital to the present and future well-being of humanity.
Dr Shally Victor, Dr Jijo George and Shamim Ahmad spoke on the impact of climate change and steps necessary to control changing weather patterns, rising sea level and extreme weather events.
Dr Lubna Irfan (Teacher-in-charge, Literary Club) extended the vote of thanks.

At the AMU Girls School, the World Environment Day was observed with tree plantations by Amna Malik (School Principal), Arshi Zafar Khan (Vice Principal), Alka Agarwal (Event Incharge), Afshan W Khan and Zeba Nawaz.
Himanshi won the slogan writing competition in the Classes IX and X category with Namsvi Singh and Madiha Imran sharing the second prize. Aprajita Upadhyay finished third and Ramsha Niazi and Tanya Singh received the consolation prizes.
In the essay writing contest for students of classes VI to VII, Shaikh Safwa Nomani and Rabiya Ahmad got the first positions. Nizaliya Sheikh and Zakia finished second with Hiram Khan and Iram Iqbal sharing the third places. Aaradhya Choudhary was given the consolation prize.
Mantasha won the poster making competition in the Classes III to V category. Ruqaiya Tahira finished second, Aiman and Mahera Shahid Ansari shared the third place and Aiman and Sidra received consolation prizes.
Students of the Abdullah School participated in an online poster competition to observe the World Environment Day.
“The competition was held to raise awareness on environmental issues among the school students”, said Umra Zaheer (School Superintendent).
She delivered a talk on conservation of natural resources and the natural environment to repair damage and reverse trends.
Similarly, Prof M Shafey Kidwai, Member-in-Charge, Public Relations Office with Omar S Peerzada (PRO) and others planted tree saplings in front of the Public Relations Office to observe the World Environment Day.
