Workshop on Social Work with Marginalised Groups

Aligarh : Resource persons and faculty members provided students with an understanding of how to offer end-to-end support and training to people of marginalised communities for their empowerment in a workshop on ‘Social Work with Marginalised Groups: Developing Strategies for Sustainable Livelihood’ of the Department of Social Work, Aligarh Muslim University (AMU).

The workshop was held in collaboration with the Viklang Mand Budhi Kalyan Samiti (VKMBS).

Speaking on the complexities and dynamics of people’s livelihood practices, Rohit Sharma (Resource person from VKMBS) pressed for the need of developing alternative livelihood approaches and strategies for livelihood of marginalised groups.

He stressed on skill enhancement for the socio-economic development of the marginalised sections.

Mukul Johri (VKMBS) delineated functions of Self-Help Groups (SHGs).

He discussed skill enhancement through government run programs.

Prof Naseem Ahmad Khan (Chairman, Department of Social Work) spoke about VKMBS’s work with differently abled children and their different vocational training programmes.

He shed light on schemes to rescue children from child labour and poverty eradication.

Faculty members, Dr Mohammad Tahir, Dr Qurratul Aein Ali, Dr Mohd Arif Khan, Dr Andleeb, Dr Mohd Uzair and Dr Sameera Khanam deliberated on the accessibility of livelihood opportunities to the poor and marginalised.

Dr Mohd Uzair conducted the workshop and Dr Qurratul Aein Ali extended the vote of thanks.
