University of the Western Cape: UWC Trio Named in the Junior Boks Squad
Hooker Lukhanyo Vokozela and loosehead prop Lamla Nunu were named in the 30-member strong squad last week that will travel to Italy later this month. They will be joined by Wernich Smith – the UWC Rugby head physiotherapist.
The Junior Boks will open their Summer Series against England on 24 June before taking on Ireland five days later. The team will complete their pool fixtures on 5 July against France before playing a final cross-pool fixture a week later, with their opponent to be determined according to the final log standings.
Vokozela (nicknamed Boepa), originally from the Eastern Cape, is enrolled for a programme on economic development, while Cape Town-born Nunu is studying towards a BA degree.
“We are happy, we are proud, and we are honoured by the selection of these members to serve the nation,” commented Clement Trout, UWC Rugby Manager. “It is always great to see our athletes move up to the next level, whether provincial, national or international. Under the circumstances of the last two years (with COVID-19) and a difficult season we had (in which UWC was relegated to Varsity Shield), to have this type of positive story is good.
“And we are happy that our staff members are recognised as well. Being one of the feeders to the national system is an honour, and we are just so proud of our players and staff. This is another testimony to all the hard work and good things happening at UWC rugby and UWC Sport.”
