AMU faculty delivers lecture on benefits of millets

Aligarh : Prof Mujeebur Rahman Khan, Chairman, Department of Plant Protection, Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) pressed for the need of increasing public awareness on the health benefits of millets and their suitability for cultivation under tough conditions marked by climate change.

He was delivering a lecture on ‘Millets – Benefits of Farming and its Consumption’ in the awareness drive on the benefits of millets. The programme was a part of month-long activities to mark the International Year of Millets-2023 (IYM) in line with Ministry of Education directives.

In the lecture, Prof Mujeebur Rahman explained how millet cultivation will be beneficial for both farmers and consumers.

He spoke on the importance of millet farming with respect to livelihood and climate change and pointed out that the idea of observing the International Year of Millets has received an overwhelming support of 72 countries.

“Millets are less expensive and nutritionally superior to wheat and rice and help in tackling lifestyle health problems. They are highly resilient to climate change and can grow on nutrient-deprived soil”, said Prof Mujeebur Rahman.

After the lecture millet refreshments were distributed to faculty members and students attending the lecture.
