University of São Paulo: Openings and debates mark the Rectory’s program at the Ribeirão Preto campus

Ribeirão Preto was the third city to host the Reitoria no Campus program, in which representatives of the Central Administration spend the day at one of the seven USP campuses – Bauru, Lorena, Piracicaba, Pirassununga, Ribeirão Preto, São Carlos and the capital – to meet with representatives of the local community and encourage dialogue at the University.

The idea is that, with greater interaction between the Rectory and the different segments of the academic community, topics related to each campus can be discussed more effectively, debating proposals, formulating solutions and making management more integrated, decentralized and participatory.

At the opening of the meeting, held on August 5, in the auditorium of the Faculty of Law of Ribeirão Preto (FDRP), Dean Carlos Gilberto Carlotti Junior emphasized that “the idea of the program is to take the Rectory out of the capital and tour the campuses because we have the conviction that it is not possible to manage well without leaving the office, without talking, without dialoguing, without realizing what is happening in the community. The management plan has to be constantly adapted according to the changes that take place during the management”.

Rectory meetings on Campus must take place at least once a semester and the organization has the participation of the Management Council and the City Hall of the local USP Campus.

“This is an opportunity to discuss our projects, explaining our difficulties. We are sharing the responsibility of building things in common because what we do together is much greater than what we could do separately”, said FDRP director and president of the Campus Council, Nuno Manuel Morgadinho dos Santos Coelho.

The launch of the Reitoria no Campus program took place in São Carlos, on May 27, and the second meeting was held at the School of Arts, Sciences and Humanities (EACH), located in the east of São Paulo, on June 24. The next meeting will be held at the Pirassununga campus on August 11th.

Dialogue with the community
After the opening of the event, meetings were held between central authorities and representatives and members of the university community, which were divided into 15 working groups according to the topics to be discussed.

During the meeting between the Dean and Vice-Chancellor Maria Arminda do Nascimento Arruda with representatives of professors, students and technical and administrative staff, a group of students protested and presented some demands to the leaders.

Vice-rector Maria Arminda do Nascimento Arruda mentioned the speech of a student and commented that she had “very much enjoyed the student’s observation that we are building a new USP. And we are doing this, in dialogue with the academic community, in a civilized and conciliatory way”.

The dean highlighted the diversity of each of the campuses and said he was enthusiastic about the cultural demands raised by the community of Ribeirão Preto. “This is the wealth that this program brings us, of being able to manage the University together”, he said.

openings
Taking advantage of the presence of so many leaders on the Ribeirão Preto campus, the Faculty of Philosophy, Sciences and Letters (FFCLRP) inaugurated new facilities and presented infrastructure improvements.

“Today’s openings are the result of the work of the previous rector’s management. We know that, at USP, one dean passes the baton to the other, so I take this opportunity to thank Professor Vahan and Professor Hernandes for their efforts,” said Carlotti.

The first work inaugurated was the Small Rodent Vivarium at the college. Located in Annex 2 of Block 6, the Vivarium is a multi-user facility and unifies six vivariums of the faculty, unifying services and optimizing resources. With a total area of 110 square meters, the vivarium contains rooms to house rats, mice and guinea pigs, a room for procedures and a hygiene room.

Afterwards, the group visited the FFCLRP Teaching Center, which gained eight new rooms with a capacity of 50 seats each, spread over two floors and equipped with a multimedia projector, computer, microphone, whiteboard and air conditioning. The expansion improves accommodation for students from the unit’s ten undergraduate and ten graduate courses.

To end the visit, the Institutional Support and Agreements Section was inaugurated, installed in Casa 40. The space starts to centralize the service of the Academic Commissions of the FFCLRP to facilitate access for students and professors, as well as services related to the Commissions of Culture and University Extension (CCEx), Research and Innovation (CPqI), International Relations (CRInt), Internal Biosafety Commission (CIBio), Ethics Commission for the Use of Experimental Animals (CEUA), Research Ethics Committee (CEP ), Agreements Sector and Fapesp Project Support Office (EAIP).
